At best its been ok or its something saints have got by without.

“up & under’s” need to be consistently contested , ideally in the opponents 10m.
Other kicks need to find space and/or turn the opposition.

Don't see it as a choice of up and unders or something else.
It need to be a mixture and it needs to be well executed with an equally good chase.

All truely top sides can kick other sides "to death" at this time of year.

Saints have not really been in many tussles that have demanded a good kicking game.
Tonight might by one that Saints need to sharpen up in this regard.

Goes without saying we will need to kick well tonight with the rain we’ve had today. Coote is usually decent kicking from deep and finding space but we are awful near their line

I agree. Our habitual favouring of lofted chips to the corners when we're in the opponent's 20 means we hardly ever get repeat sets, too.

Starting 13 picks itself, I would go:

    Coote

    Tommy
    Kev
    Percy
    Grace

    Lomax
    Theo

    Walmsley
    Roby
    Thommo
    Peyroux
    Taia
    Knowles

    And a bench of:

    Amor
    LMS
    Ashworth
Bentley (better than smith at hooker for me in his last few stints there and offers much more than Paulo who has been a total dissapointment)

In terms of the game I think it may be close. I dont like the week off and never have. Both teams will be well up for it.

I think everyone can see that we just need to play a simple game. Wigans defence is woeful around the ruck and middle. Get the quick lads running off the forwards and lomax and we will hammer them.

We are our own worst enemy at times this year and last.. trying to over play and unforced errors.

Looking forward to the game now hoping for a win as il miss next weeks game.

I can’t stand Wigan, that is keeping it simple and although it seems a strong statement it’s how it is.
Will never wish any good fortune for that club

There's been games where Wigan winning is to Saints advantage and Ive thought I wanted them to win. However the second they appear on the pitch I just think come on whoever the opposition is, can't stand them winning!

I was brought up the same as you, I can't support wigan in any capacity. Always cheered for the Aussie team in the WCC whenever wigan are involved.

I’d have had Bentley for Smith. He offers more versatility. Smith only deputises for Roby.

I fully agree. I like Smith, he's got loads of potential, but Bentley is ahead of him having greater physical and mental maturity at the moment. He's also bit of a grub which would have been nice against the Pies.

Dominant so far. The question now is when will Wigan resort to thuggery ?

Don’t think even by that would save them and they need to worry about next week.

They know they are playing next week now so I don't think they will risk the dark arts with us being so far ahead. They will save them for the GF(if they can overcome Salford).

Well, I was completely wrong. I thought we’d struggle if Wigan got away with slowing us down. Well, they did get away with it to a great extent and we still tore them a new one!

Default 19 man squad v Wigan

Well we’ve all been talking about Saints‘s big match temperament, but that was as good a half as I can remember seeing in a big game. We’ve kept it tight and fast, hit with purpose and kicked well. And our completion rate must be pretty high. Wigan’s only answer is to try to play round us, which has been effective once or twice but will also lead to errors. Let’s hope we can keep it up and give them some real demons to deal with.

One handling error in the first half after all the rain we had today is outstanding .

Unfortunately I can only listen on Wish, and to make it worse I can only get the Wigan commentary, but they are far better than our 2. T o make it even better, they are slating Wigan and absolutely drooling over Saints. I must admit they sound very fair. Great to hear them saying SO'L shouldné be on the pitch, too old too slow, their words. They also said they don't remember Wigan ever playing a team as good as us.

Very similar start to Wembley really. Scored two tries* early on then conceded a soft one against the run of play

Reacted much better this time though

*obviously the tries we scored at Wembley didn’t count for some yet unexplained reason
