Britt was more than a decent prop, too

He certainly was. Old school him.

Another player who I thought was quality was Darren Smith. Goes under the radar a bit as he was here in the 2003 season that didn't go well bar the odd highlight

    1. Long. The best British half I've seen, could play either HB positions equally well, fabulous vision, pace, passing and kicking but also plenty of bottle to carry on after a number of serious injuries, a few of which were deliberately inflicted. Learned how to adapt his game coming to the end of his career when he lost a bit of pace and you only need to listen to him now to know how good his rugby brain is.

    2. Newlove. The best British centre I've seen. Unplayable at times, if he didn't run round you he'd run through you. Tremendously quick for a bloke that big and smashed people in defence for fun.

    3. Lyon. An absolute pleasure to watch, so naturally gifted he seemed to think some of the amazing things he could do were perfectly normal. He fitted us perfectly at the time and probably doesn't get enough credit for being able to play a few different positions. Had a few good •••• ups with him too.

    4. Sculthorpe. Would probably be no.2 had it not been for injuries. Hard as nails, one of those annoying people that's just good at everything he does (apart from backing horses), always stood up at international level too. Hands of a half with the back of a prop comes to mind.

    5. Walmsley. The way he's developed himself from a big clumsy dope into one of the worlds best props speaks a lot about him and the club. Carried us many times and worked hard on his fitness to have a pretty good engine on him now. Obviously overcoming the neck injury too.

    .
    These would be mine too

Honourable mentions to Willie Talau, Jason Hooper and Lee Gilmour

I glad that someone mentioned Eric Hughes because i always thought he was treated badly by Saints , he put together that 1996 team and then MCrea got the job of picking the team to win and go on to win the things that alot of people remember , the players were a lot out of the Academy that Eric Hughes put together.

Whatever happened to Eric. He dropped completely off the radar after the Hanley saga.

Freddie Tuilagi wasn’t bad, although he could be a bit soft taking the ball in!

We have been lucky to have witnessed some great players at SAints in the summer era and I think players like Hooper,Gilmour,Britt and Fairleigh where excellent signings(pity Britt and Fairleigh never got to play together) Iro was good for us also as was Mcvey. Think Long turned out to be one our best signings.

Funny that. I swear I’ve just watched Saints V Brisbane from 2001 with Britt and Fairleigh in the same Saints team.

No mate Britt came in 2002. I felt sorry for him because he suffered by comparison to Fairleigh. Britt was a quality old school prop. Very pedestrian but tough and a good ball handler. Fairleigh was just something else. Fairleigh was like Lyon and Meninga. Unbelievable players we wish we saw more of.

Apologies. I’m wrong. It was Shields and Fairleigh. Doh!

Apology accepted;-) We signed Britt to play alongside Fairleigh but Fairleigh decided against doing another year due to injury. Britt was very good for us I remember him outplaying the awesome foursome down at Knowsley road.

He was being sarcastic, the Tuilagi family has a reputation of being one of, if not, the toughest family in rugby
