The difficulty with bringing in threequarters in the modern game is that wing isn't the position it used to be, where you could be largely out of the action for long periods. Back then a good way of bringing through a centre or even half-back was to ease them in on the wing, knowing that they wouldn't have too much responsibility to deal with. But now I'm not sure wing is any easier to play than centre. The centre probably has a bit more decision-making responsibility in defence, and perhaps needs a bit more composure with the ball, but wingers in the modern game have a pretty gruelling workload bring the ball out from the 20, and they are much more systematically targeted by attacking kicking games. Unfortunately one thing we don't seem to have is a back-up specialist winger, so we're going to have to improvise one way or another.

Batchelor for Percy, Simm for Tommy would be my choice, as defensively we would not lose too much.
The coaches see them in training they know best, just my thoughts, from what I`ve seen Batchelor`s tackling is very good and he seems to have a bit of zip from the clips I have seen of him playing centre.
Simm could be then eased in alongside Kev.

Selecting those two wouldn't surprise me. I think Batchelor played a season at centre for York, I know it is a different level but at least he should be aware of positioning and he has a good physique for centre.

He has, I forgot about him. Had a decent game against Leeds too so should be good to go for another crack.

Woolf has just said on Saints TV that nothing is finalised but talked about Jack Welsby, Matty Costello and Josh Simm as options to cover Percival and Makinson. He has said that Peyroux should be available but hinted strongly that Bentley will stay at 2nd row and said that's his best position. No mention of Batchelor.

Reading between the lines and putting 2 and 2 together I'd guess at Costello centre and Welsby on the wing. I hope I've read Woolf wrong as I've said before that I'd be chucking Simm in there personally to see how he goes.

Steady mate... that's what I hinted and suggested earlier in the week, then one of the really nice people on here (Legman) came along as said he was glad I wasn't picking the team or interpreting Woolf's comments.

I liked his summary of Bentley, “he’s a tough bugger who wants to work hard”

I would like to see Batchelor at left centre and Simm at right with KN on the wing. I'm assuming that Simm can play right centre? I just had a look on Saints and Wiki sites to see if it mentioned which side, it didn't but according to Wiki he is 3 cm taller and 7 Kgs heavier than on Saints?

Ok let's see what happens. We have to follow the judgement of the coaching staff as they are with the team and see what happens and who's ready. However given young Welsbys big concerns under the high ball and lack of pace both shown up in earlier performances then our squad development has to be considered not at standard. I'm personally struggling to get on side with KW, I admit he's lost me & there's no way back. I'm trying not to criticise him too much but I just don't get him. We can only reflect on his short term selections and see how that helps develop the squad going forwards as the two are linked. If I was a youngster who wasn't getting a chance in these circumstances in 'my' position as available I'd be looking elsewhere for next season no doubt.

I think most games Batchelor has played left centre and Simm right centre, maybe Woolf is not considering that option because it might mean we lose effectiveness on the edge and there is a danger there will be no quick ball to wingers Grace and Naiqama.

My personal opinion is that Costello will do a better job than Batchelor or Simm, because Costello doesn't do anything spectacular I think he attracts criticism, Holbrook and now Woolf selects him as our 3rd centre so he must be a steady option from a coach point of view, I know Costello is leaving next season but he's here to do a job this season.

For that right wing spot Woolf could consider Simm as well as Welsby whoever he selects that player without doubt will be under pressure from that high ball.

Haven't seen much of Batchelor nor Simm, other than on video. I just think now would be a good time to try them. But, I agree about Costello, I think his last game when Percy was out was probably the best I have seen him play, did nothing special but didn't do anything wrong.
