We always seem to do well on academy tours to Aus but not many of them become top SL players. It would be interesting to know how many of the Aussies kick on after those games. The Pies always seem (at least to me) to have more of their youth that make the grade. I don't know if that is fact or just my perception.

I would agree with Noel. I think Eastmond was another one that became muscle bound because he was too bulked up and a good period in his final seasons was spent injured. I can see Percy going that way to an extent.

Wasn't questioning you Noel, I was referring albeit badly to the first line below, I've stated before about how we have ruined many players by trying to turn them into something they're not.

We are the team were players' good reputations go to die.

OK, not very sharp at the moment. Not surprised I misunderstood.

Regarding other replies, yes I get that when I started naming names you can come up with a case by case basis to remove blame from the club. Someone brought Wheeler up, and yes I agree with that poster, he just wasn't born with a strong enough body. He was nothing to do with the club.

However it is hard to deny the pattern that more players get worse at Saints than get better.

Scott Moore is a massive damnation, didn't progress as a junior, shipped out to the Giants and became an international with them, came back and went back to being terrible. Leon Pryce got up to some dodgy stuff as a Saints player but didn't get the sack because he was too good to let go. Scott was just not good enough and when he pushed his luck became an easy sacrifice for the clubs image.
I could agree with you but then we would both be wrong.

OK start with an easy one, Paul Clough, an academy international Paul was a classic ball running back rower. A running and passing threat on the fringes. A simpler if not more skillful version of a slightly younger player around at the time, Liam Farrell. A 19 years of ages Paul became one of the first players to score a try at the New Wembley.

Now Paul Clough is an undersized bulked up prop playing in the second tier with Bradford. Out sized to match it as a prop in Super League and too bulked and slow to play out wide Paul is a washed up old has-been.

Shawn Maggenis, bulked up, knees couldn't take it. End of story.

Scott Moore dismantled the Aussie school boys on his own. With players like Blake Green and Greg Ingles on the other side, Scott was too much for the Aussies in a victorious tour. An exciting ball playing scrum half that reminded some of us of a Gregory or a Schofield with his dummy and run. Destiny had plans for Scotty however Saints had a different idea for him, after three years on the protein shakes Scott was a fat hooker. Maybe the biggest waste of talent in the clubs history.

Adam Swift (a work in progress, Saints haven't finished f**king up this kid yet): In his first few game Adam had the whole League soiling themselves. Lightning fast and great feet. You gave Adam in inch and he took a mile. Two of Adams first 15 games resulted in Hat Tricks with the second coming in a playoff game against Hull KR. In this time Adam had become Saints most dangerous winger.

Now, Adam this year is bulked up and has lost a lot of his pace. He is not as nimble, resulting in Adam getting tackled by his own shadow against Salford earlier this year.

Other players have simply been mismanaged. John Wilkin a ball playing forward has been used as a working back rower while a player with a similar skill set in Kevin Sinfield has somehow become one of the most celebrated players of all time.

Jamie Foster, a superb goal kicker was allowed to grow lazy and was played out of position given that he was a great centre at academy level.

Dixon, Ashhurst, along with Maggenis were exciting players that were simply just not developed by the club. Ball players used a battering rams.
Agree with some not all, the main problem is and this is throughout the sport from grass roots to senior level is most have forgotten rugby is a game of evasion and invasion. Rather than using speed, agility, balance and composure we are looking to win the collision, whats happened to avoiding collision and using the ball to move around the field, creating then exploiting space?
Its all about giving the big player the ball to gain metres

Wow ! I think you mean running past players and handing them off like days of old , that will never catch on, you have got to bash into them even if you get hurt that's the way the game is played now .

Particularly valid of using Wingers and mini full backs to "hit up" the first three tackles each set....so you decide they need bulking up and then they do get slower. And then injured......like Makinson and Swift

Oh for the days of the offloading prop....

Cleal.....can I add Savelio to the current list. Great hands, great feet so let's get him to barge as a prop first man.

Turner, we've decided he's too poor defensively for Centre so we've bulked him up to play as an extra forward but now he's also too slow for centre

I agree about Foster, but in a different way. Because he was a pretty boy we sent him to any photoshoot going and he then thought he was the glamour boy of the team, and forgot you have to do it on the field. I remember the try he scored at Headingley when he rolled the ball round his back, but I also remember him combing his hair at Bradford instead of catching the ball

I think you can add Josh Jones to the players we bulked up as well....

I agree with with the proposal and thoughts of this thread. JT is not good enough. BUT, he is better than Owns. I watched the Cas match. JT was 18th man. He should have been on the field ahead of Owens. Anyone would have been better than Owens. How strange it felt, missing Turner's physical presence on the edge.

They picked it out of the air, over his head.
    They ran around him.
    The brushed his tackles off..
    Anyone!
I would even play a man down.
At least them, Lomax and Peyroux could do their own jobs.

I watched a clip earlier of JT playing in the centres for Hull a couple of years back. Speed to burn, nice step at the line, definite strike centre. Now he's been bulked up to play back row, lost all his pace due to it and runs straight only at a man.

I'd say blame the past & present saints coaches for the collapse of Jordan Turner

True to an extent, but his defensive frailties have remained a constant throughout is career. I agree that he is ridiculously bulked up, a by product of the myth over here that all players need to be bulked up like popeye.

With all the commotion over last night's performance Jordan Turner getting stretchered off seems gone amiss; does anyone know what happened and how he is?

faking it seems to be the general consensus.

Has that come from the medical staff or the terraces?

Jordan is fine but the stretcher is knackered.

Apparently it couldnt cope with the weight of his bionic arse and the club are now busy looking for a replacement.

Thank you for a genuine and concerned comment Ch 22. Some people should follow your example instead if making nasty and snide comments.

Surprised at some of the comments and can't see it being along those lines. I'm as down as anyone on both players, coaching staff and the club in general but there has to be a common decency line drawn somewhere?

    Exactly.

Mind you, the Coaching Genius himself seemed very offhand when asked about Turners injury post match, as though he really didn't give a toss - I commented on it okn another thread. Seems the genius's lack of concern about player welfare is catching!

The offensive comments about Turner (and others) are generally from people who are most likely sat in urine stained underpants with six weeks of unwashed plates in the sink and an old VHS porn movie in a 20 year old video player paused on the money shot who would not say 'boo to a goose' in real life.
Oh, how the Internet has made them feel so brave.
