We signed Tommy Martyn as a centre or stand off - he'd played most of his rugby for Oldham at centre, switching mainly to stand off in his final season there.

I've got an old Rugby Leaguer or League Express from 1992 somewhere in the loft with an article that Saints were looking at signing Oldham pair centre Tommy Martyn and second row/loose forward Chris Joynt.

According to Saints Heritage stats, Martyn played mostly at 6 during his debut season, with a handful of games each at centre and scrum half.

Incidentally, the first half of that 93/4 season saw loads of team changes week on week. In the first half of the season alone, the halfback roles were played by Martyn, Ropati, Cooper, Griffiths, Veivers, Gus O'Donnell, with John McAtee also playing a few games later in the season. The first combo to get a few games together was (stand off & scrum half) Ropati & Griffiths and this seemed a fall-back combination through the season. Then they tried Griffiths & O'Donnell before switching to Martyn & Griffiths, and then Ropati & Martyn.

We signed Goulding the following season, and we first saw a Martyn-Goulding halfback partnership on 8th November 1994 (24-5 win at Doncaster!). The season had started again with an unsettled halfback combination, Phil Wareing and Simon Booth both having time at 6 alongside Goulding, as well as Veivers, Cooper & Griffiths before an extended Martyn-Goulding partnership.

Some of the stand off type role void being filled by fullback loose forward and even backrow forwards. The game positions with squad numbers isn’t so black and white anymore.
I’d say that the better teams, or the teams with better halves, are breaking away from that though. The Roosters obviously had Cronk at 7 and Keary at 6 but Keary would roam around the field a lot more and would play both sides of the ruck, Mitchell Pearce at Newcastle plays all over the field with Ponga and Connor Watson (or whoever is at 6 for them at the minute) running off him. Even at Saints, Lomax starts on the left but when he’s on form he plays both sides of the field as well, Blake Austin isn’t fixed to one side of the field at Warrington.

I still think most of the better teams would have a communicator/organiser and a running threat in the halves.

Blake Austin plays as far from Morgan Knowles as he can get.

And most times it is not far enough for him. I think Blake is a decent player, but Knowles really has him in his pocket.
