Default On this day in 1996

On another thread I put some clippings I collected for Good Friday 1996. As it generated some interest I will post some others items as we progress through the year.

In 1996 it was Easter Sunday so Saints fresh from the victory over Wigan were preparing for a trip to the Leeds on Easter Monday Leeds had lost their first game at home to Warrington 18 - 22 and lost 26 - 22 to Castleford next time out.

Big news for Saints was the expected return of Andy Leatham, but there is a doubt over Steve Prescott.

I also include a summary of the rule changes for 1996 and prospective chances for each team.

That Leeds game is on saintstv. You can see why they dropped the non-scoring team kicking off, we ran in about 3 tries without leeds getting out of their half

    That's the rule now..

They changed it so that the scoring team kicked off, then went back to what it's always been didn't they, in an attempt to make everything fair

Sorry that’s what I meant, it was a well intentioned rule but had a major flaw in that after a Score a deep kick and strong set put the other team continually on the back foot.

I think they put too much weight on the shoulders of a young lad called Sculthorpe around that time.

Here are the reports for Easter Monday. Saints won 24 - 46 thanks to a magnificent 60 metre effort from Danny Arnold. It is interesting only 3 games in the reporter John Whalley notes this is probably a game Saints would in the past have lost. Kieron Cunningham is declared the best hooker in the country. Leeds have future Saints players Kevin Iro and Nick Fozzard in their team and former Saint George Mann.

In other games Wigan stumble to beat Warrington with Paul Cullen having a seat in the sin bin for Wire, Bradford beat London with Steve McNamara making his debut following a £120k transfer from division 1 Hull FC, Paris and Oldham draw and Workington loose to Sheffield.

Halifax and Castleford play tomorrow and Denis Betts faces the ARL disciplinary committee.

Holroyd? He could play a bit but not in Tommy's league.

I was amazed when the story broke about the player swap in early 2000, mind due we also had just got the wrong Adamson and Tricky Trindall, and Bryan Henare not exactly 3 fans favourites

Halifax v Castleford today another high scoring game.

Halifax loose again. For Castleford there is future Saints Chris Smith on the wing, for Halifax Freddie Tuilagi, and Paul Anderson. Castleford even played a trialist in the first team Diccon Edwards (what ever happened to him!)

Good to see increased attendances over Easter at an average just over 8000.

In Australia Denis Betts gets a two match ban, and the super league war in the courts is in full swing.

London are complaining about the high penalty count against them. If I recall correctly they were kings of the spoiling tactics and time wasting!
