As far as I know there are no buses of an evening anymore.

Train would be from St Helens Junction or Lea Green.

Does Haydock actually have any public transport bar the stagecoach to St. Helens?

Train or bus from Earlestown to Warrington is easy enough. There are no transport links between Haydock and Earlestown at that time, and it's just not feasible from St. Helens.

You can get there via a train from Wigan but I don't think you can get back so late.

Bus/taxi to Earlestown depending on where you're staying, train from there to Warrington Bank Quay. There are no buses back from Earlestown - Haydock after 6pm so it'll have to be a taxi (unless you're feeling brave and want to walk). Redline taxis are around 30 seconds walk (if that) from Earlestown station.

Trains to Wireland are usually at around xx:41 from platform 5 (over the bridge, along the footpath and over the other bridge) and xx:51 from platform 3 (over the bridge and behind the building on the other side). From personal experience however the timetables at Earlestown station are for decorative purposes only!

Christ! if you remember the stagecoach you're older than you look.lol

There must be some enterprising car owner who after having his/her palm crossed with silver (the paper kind) would be game to pass through bandit country to help the poor fellow out.
