Magic Weekend at Elland Road next year? Absolutely disastrous decision if so.
I’ve only seen that useless fatty from Bradford saying it’s in Leeds. If he told me that it was Monday, I’d go and buy a paper to double check.

And, most of all, f*cking pointless.
Magic was introduced to try to keep the enthusiasm running in South Wales after the Millennium was such a great CCF venue. Was then expanded to have the idea of showcasing the sport outside the heartlands.
With that as a concept, it was ideal.
Even taking it to the Emptyhad was targeting a potential growth area within the broader heartland region.
So to have a shitty football ground in Leeds stage it.... FFS
What an abysmal, unimaginative choice, which piddles all over the whole frigging justification for the Magic Weekend

Whoever is responsible for this decision doesn’t deserve to be in a ••••ing job. What an absolute cluster****

IMG didn’t want Magic but it’s been kept on. Moving to August and a stadium nobody really wants to go to is perfect for them. It gives them justification to not continue with it in 2025 because they’ll be able to point to barely 40,000 turning up for the 2024 event.

Sadly I think this is about right, IMG will look at moving it somewhere away from the success of Newcastle to a place where it will not work anywhere near as good to use that as a base to drop for 2025.
Newcastle as a venue is perfect for magic. The stadium is great, central location and great atmosphere for the fans which makes it perfect for a weekend away. Moving it to Elland Road means less people will go for the weekend (as they dont need to) and just choose to travel for the day as its closer which makes it less of an event for the fans. It’s a long walk from the centre and not many pubs around means fans will be limited to the stadium only for the full day which is also far from ideal. I suppose they could use the conference & banqueting suite building to create a fan-zone type thing - we had our work Christmas party there last year and its relatively big - but its still nowhere near what Newcastle offers and will no doubt be used for corporates like Leeds United do. The stadium itself is outdated and almost in the middle of nowhere, and my mate working in Leeds says the roads are being dug up all over the city at the moment and traffic in and out is a nightmare.
On the face of it, it seems they are taking one of the few successes left in the game and trying to make a pigs ear of it - sounds about right for people running our game
What an utterly pathetic decision if true. The clubs should refuse to play, albeit I assume they voted for this farce?

A good point, but are they that bright? Regardless of how this decision came about it’s now clear that IMG ar e not going to be RL’s saviour. At the moment they seem less competent than the RFL and that’s saying something. Some say IMG has a long term strategy, but making RL a laughing stock for the next few years before this long term strategy materialises is a big gamble.
IMG will bail out within 5 years.
Humans are more concerned with having than being.
It's not necessarily incompetence. There could be other factors at play over MW.
Money is the big one. I seem to recall that the Welsh tourist board, or something like that, paid RFL to hold the early events in Cardiff, then that cash dried up, so we moved on.
Maybe the deal in Newcastle, if there was one, is now less favourable, and Leeds came up with the goods?
There's also costs going the other way. Is Elland Road cheaper to hire than other alternatives?
Finally we have IMG. People are saying that they don't like MW, but are they just responding to the results of consultations with fans?
We all know that there's a broad spectrum of opinions on MW. Some hate it, others love it, with every opinion in between.
Is this the result of those consultations? A compromise if you like?
One plus will be Sky. Their viewing figures will be high. Plus if anyone is going I wouldn’t buy a ticket until a week before when they will be on Groupon for a quid.

Sounds like Newcastle wanted to keep it but we wanted to move the date (further away from when Challenge Cup final will be held) and there wasn’t a date that mutually worked.
So sounds like we’ve bottled it and gone easy/worst option in response.
I’d rather they binned / paused it for a year rather than devalued it by playing it at Elland Road. It’s the worst possible outcome IMO.

From a personal point of view Elland road is a shithole with nothing around it another own goal for the sport if it's true.
Learned comment from The Don
At least I'll be able to attend if this is where it's being staged. Last time I went there was the Meninga final.
Glad you mention this, I thought I was being paranoid but there was definitley a new intake in October 2023. Mr Mooves has been noticable by his absence after an avalanche of posts in a short period of time, I can't help feeling he's still around though! As for Magic going to Elland Road, it beggars belief. A dump of a ground, (hardly befitting the moniker "Magic") that has a terrible reputation and is miles from anywhere!
Looks like Saints, Wigan, Leeds, Warrington and Hull are all playing on Saturday. It’s not going to be a well attended Sunday!
