I'm quite worried that everyone knew about this but the club have waited as if it's our BIG signing for next season. We seem to have a few people who seem to have a bit of insider knowledge on here, so has anyone any ideas if we are showing any interest in particular players.

By all accounts Saints never announce signings until either the end of the season or the other club announce the player will be leaving.

Whitley is a very solid signing, we need quite a bit more but he shouldn’t be downplayed based on that.

When he was at Widnes I used to think that he was too small for SR, but he is a very durable and quite versatile player. He is a good competitor. Happy we have signed him.

I like Whitley, tough defender, can run a good line. No slouch, everything you want from a back rower.
We also have 4 other second rowers vying for two places, add Whitley in that makes 5 into 2.
The likely starters are Sironen & Batchelor, then we have Bell running alongside Knowles for 13, likely Bell to the bench. Then we have the enigma of Sione who I guess will now be at prop in 2024 alongside our starting props Lees and Walmsley with Delaney and Sione on the bench?
We seem top heavy in back rowers for me. Considering without Hopoate if we take any injury/suspension to our back line we could be struggling again in attack.

I think the answer to why we've signed another backrower when it would appear to be the part of the squad in which we have the greatest strength already, is that Whitley has played a lot at centre, which is the are of the squad where we've probably got the least strength in depth.

Basically, it means that when Hurrell and Percival are out injured (which is pretty frequent tbh), then instead of Ben Davies slotting in, you can put in Whitley. I'd be surprised if this wasn't the thinking behind the signing.

I was thinking the same thing; in fact I wonder if we signed with a view to playing him at centre. I think he is a very good signing along with Clarke. I think we are ok in the forwards now. I hope Ritson comes good, and that we've got a young kid ready to come through. Having said all that I think we are weakest in the three quarters and the halfbacks and I hope we can find a decent winger from somewhere even if that's in house. I don't know much about our academy players, I believe there is a very good winger in there but he is two years away or so.

Recruitment for me has to be better than what you have.I am not sure Matt is as much as I like him as a SR.

Better than Royle? If you assume that Mata'utia is taking a more flexible role playing anywhere in the pack, due to LMS retiring, Royle is our only specialist backrow cover for Sironen and Batchelor. Whitley is a significantly better option for depth.

Don't get me wrong I like him but we have needs elsewhere we have Knowles,Sironen,Matautia,Bachelor,Wingfield,Bell, Royle etc all available for the 11,12,13 positions and we should imo be spending elsewhere? We may still be I hope.

Whitley is just a replacement for Mata'utia who is moving up to prop to replace LMS so I am not sure why there is such an issue over Whitley signing and where he fits in.

I really like him and he offers a different type of line threat than Batchelor and Sironen. Those three rotating in the back row is quite exciting with Knowles and Bell taking up LF.

We just need a winger/centre and another prop to plug the Paasi gap and I think that covers us.

Another second row signed but I think he can play in the centres as well and had a decent try scoring ratio while at Cats so I’m guessing he will provide cover for second row/centre.

The couple of times I saw him at centre he didn’t look out of place.

He has only played centre on 16 occasions during his career - https://www.rugbyleagueproject.org/p...positions.html

It’s Clark for Roby, Matautia for LMS, Whitley for Matautia and potentially Eseh for Norman and then some academy kids stepping up to replace the likes of Baxter, Pemberton etc. I don’t think we’re looking at Whitley as a centre unless an injury crisis.

we are so light at centre, that it wont need a crisis for us to call on back up. Hurrell and Percival are hardly robust and you can guarantee that one or both of them will miss big chunks of the season.

I'd have both Knowles and Sione at prop

    Lees
    Clark
    Knowles
    Batchelor
    Sironen
    Bell

    Walmsley
    Sione
    Whitley
    Mbye

Delaney, Stephens and Eseh to be rotated into the sqaud

Expect to see Vaughan and Sambou step up from the academy and get game time at centre next year. Both very highly rated, with the former captaining England at u18s this year. Wouldn't surprise me if one of them was considered first choice by seasons end like we did with Delaney this season.

He could still play there in an emergency as position not entirely new to him.

Wingfield should be ready for the start of the season. It was hoped that he may even have been fit for the end of season just gone.

Not sure where this perceived confidence that Eseh is definitely coming, seems to have gone very quiet

I hope we’re not done in that department and a new signing comes in so that it’s New Signing, Percival, Hurrell, Davies in that order for centre.

There are a few on Twitter saying to expect an announcement on that over the coming days. Also centre/winger a week or two later. Whether they're just old rumours going round in the wash, who knows.
