Pass to Dodd who takes it forward at pace, Royle runs a really hard line, ball behind him to Lomax who now has a 3 on 2 as he takes it at pace to the line. Russell panics and bites in on Hopoate, Lomax picks him off and Bennison is away in space on the outside. Out of our whole team only our right side 2nd row and winger aren’t involved, every single player gets involved as the ball shifts across, nobody is stood about waiting for someone else to do something. Currently we are carrying too many passengers in attack and it makes it easy for defences to slide out and cover when we move it wide.

    Brilliant analysis.

    You obviously can't put one of these moves on every single play - but variations of this a dozen times a game isn't too much to ask for. Our halfbacks/pivots aren't 'pinning' opposition defenders enough, not helped - as your example highlights - by a total lack of dummy runners and running options.
    He's not the Messiah, he's a naughty boy.

    A good breakdown of that try.

    Under Woolf we weren't expansive but every player ran hard whether they got the ball or not when we were at our best, and that gives defenders that many decisions to make that they'll always get some wrong.

    Problem at the minute is it's not far off the entire team that's not looking threatening so that's when you have to say it's the coaching/game plan rather than the players that are the issue.

    Hurrell has been our best attack player through brute strength and skill, that sort of sums up where we are currently.

    That is pretty much what every team runs with using two block plays to create that overlap on the outside.

    You saw it done really well with Wigan and Maguire back in 2010 and that is when things became a lot more structured in SL. They did this relentlessly but used it so often that they could really cause teams problems as they did it so quick and they had Sam Tomkins who was on fire at that time.

    The difference for our try vs warrington was: -

    1) the quick play the ball meaning that the defensive line was not set and ready to move forwards (we are struggling to win the collision in our own half/middle third);
    2) each and every pass was done at pace and on the money (often our passes are too slow and/or too low/behind, etc)
    3) dummy runners who are running at pace and are genuine options (I think the bans our second rowers are having is not helping with this)
    4) made warrington's edge make decisions and being quick enough to find the right pass when they made their move inside (our playmakers often more often than not choosing the wrong option)

    This is why we are struggling because Dodd is too slow/laboured and he is not biting enough into the line to engage the 4th man in so its easy for defenders as they are one v one on the outside. Lomax/Welsby is then expected to create something out of nothing.

    The big trend particularly in the NRL is to run a dummy runner at the inside shoulder of the 2nd man in and this often created that 2 v 1 outside as the winger will usually look inside once the centre does and then backing the winger to beat the FB round the back. We were doing this with Coote and he was picking out the right pass more often than not and it was on the money. Now we are not doing this and are trying to rely on inside runners creating space, but it is not working as Welsby does not have the pace like French/Field does to make those edge defenders turn in early enough.

    However I feel the problems are also further back than in the opposition 20. The problem is we are not winning the tackle and getting on the front foot early enough in sets to really work over defenders. This means we are often playing out of poor position and Dodd kicking to corners and the other team starting on the 30/40m line. We really need our power game back.

    For anyone remotely interested, Seibold had a great segment on youtube and this is one that focuses on the attack.
