Default 21 man squad v Leeds

    https://www.saintsrlfc.com/2023/03/0...s-r3-vs-leeds/

    1. Jack Welsby, 2. Tommy Makinson, 4. Mark Percival, 5. Jon Bennison, 6. Jonny Lomax, 7. Lewis Dodd, 8. Alex Walmsley, 10. Matty Lees, 11. Sione Mata’utia, 13. Morgan Knowles, 14. Joey Lussick, 15. Louie McCarthy-Scarsbrook, 16. Curtis Sironen, 18. Jake Wingfield, 19. James Bell, 20. Dan Norman, 21. Ben Davies, 22. Sam Royle, 23. Konrad Hurrell, 25. Tee Ritson, 30. George Delaney

As always, I will assume everyone in the 21 is fit and available and that we will pick the strongest 17 from that 21.

    So.....

    Welsby
    Makinson
    Hurrell
    Percival
    Ritson
    Lomax
    Dodd
    Walmsley
    Lussick
    Lees
    Sironen
    Matautia
    Knowles

    Wingfield
    Bell
    LMS
    Norman

Royle, Davies, Bennison and Delaney to miss out.

Personally I wouldn't mind seeing Delaney get a chance over Norman.

Anyone know if Pemberton is injured? He played v Widnes didn't he?

Can’t argue with that but won’t be surprised Bennison instead of Ritson.

Not seen any confirmation of his injury however he was limping and had his leg/knee taped up in the world club challenge.
He was ‘in with a chance’ of playing this week.

100% Wello will go for Bennison over Ritson. Other than that the squad picks itself

I saw a pic whilst he was still in OZ, he had a black compression stocking on his right leg, the 50+ hour flight wouldn't have helped if its a muscle strain. Also Matautia looked as though he had a calf strain at Cas and was pulling up lame, but he's in the 21 man squad, Similar with Percival.

Don't think Wello will take any chances on muscle strains being early season, he mentioned the team are having a 3 day break after the Leeds game.

Harsh on Bell for sure, but equally Leeds hate a big pack and be good to give 15 minutes to Delaney to see what he’s capable of

I don’t think you could drop Bell for Delaney, I think the choice is between Norman and Delaney for that last spot. They’d both probably only do 10-15 minutes so I don’t think you could have both on the bench as it would be asking too much of the others.

Norman is a big unit but doesn’t seem to have that much of an impact as you’d expect for his size, he made an error against Cas but otherwise didn’t really do much else that was noticeable. I don’t think he’s done that much since he’s been here and whilst not everyone can be a star player I don’t think he’s worth continuing with once his contract expires this season. It may be worth utilising Delaney a bit more throughout the season but I imagine Wellens will be pretty selective with the games he is used in, I don’t think Leeds at the start of the season will be one so I’d expect Norman to be on the bench for this one.

Seems the obvious line up to go for. Only contention is possibly Bennison over Ritson but I’d be going with Ritson for now.
Forwards win games. The backs decide by how much.

Maybe Ritson and Makinson swap wings and Delaney for Norman?

Is it just me that wants Dan Norman to jump on the scales then look in the mirror, realise how f***** big he is and play like it? The guy has all the physical attributes to make it as a SL prop but just looks terrified of contact when he’s carrying the ball.

No it's not only you. A bit of aggression in his and running and using his size to hand off and break tackles, he could be a regular selection.

This is harsh, I’ve seen some improvement in him and think he’ll be a useful player for us this year.

He had a short run of games in mid season were he was a handful and scored a couple of try’s. Never really had game time since don’t think Woolf had a lot of confidence to give him enough minutes.

None Batch isn`t playing !! Seemed to be taking his frustration out on him last time.

Commentary said Percy had rolled his ankle during the Cas game, he may be one of many walking wounded.

For all of Big Al`s awkward running style and play the ball clumsiness early in his career, he had good pace and lateral movement.
Norman`s footwork at the line is sill poor his contact is usually on the wrong foot, Alan Hunte had the same problem early in his career then Eric Hughes spotted it and seemed to rectify it, get him back for Dan.

Looking at the website appears to be only tickets in the North unreserved section and family stands left. Very promising for a big crowd for the home opener.
I hope Saints have done something positive to get as many Saints fans in the East as well. Perhaps with local schools, rugby clubs or via the sponsors- I don't necessary mean total freebies as that is not fair on those that have paid full whack. Better to have it looking a lock out and take money at the concessions than have empty space by the Leeds fans.

Watching the interview with Bennison on Saints TV it sounded as though the interviewer and JB assumed John will get the nod tomorrow. While I would like to see more of Ritson, I don’t think anyone can deny Bennison deserves it on past performances. As an aside I thought he came across as very level headed in the interview.

As a PS.Bennison mentioned that he is a bit taller than Tommy M. According to Saints website Jb is 1.77 and TM is 180?
