Baxter and Royce have got quite high up squad numbers. The 25 being left open is quite conspicuous though.
Forwards win games. The backs decide by how much.

    Not necessarily.

Helps paint a picture of actively seeking to recruit whether they are or are not.
Saints might be , but the free squad number doesn't prove that.

It's a holding position rather then something is imminent.

I don't agree. They would make themselves look so stupid if it was to be kept empty all season now. I think they know they're bringing someone in.

    Reserved for Regan Grace.

As for left wing, can see Hurrell playing there as a power winger in some games especially if we have no injuries but want to rotate in the backs.

You are not the first person to float that idea.

By the time he is fit , the RU season will be over or coming to an end.
He has a 1 year deal.

Agree someone will come in eventually , but making a placeholder now does not indicate that is is imminent.

No not necessarily imminent, I didn't claim otherwise. But I really can't see them leaving that shirt blank if they weren't going to sign someone before the season kicks off personally.

Konrad will be playing centre all season, why wouldn't he?

Yeah my only concern is if we lost someone in the spine we're then moving a few pieces around without a replacement ready made to just slot in. Like you say though, if Moss or Archer can fill that role then great.

I think a winger or spine cover would be useful either way.

If we signed a winger, you can move Bennison or Hopoate to 1 and Welsby in the halves if one of the halves went down for example. If we signed spine cover you could use Bennison / Hopoate on the wing rather than moving them to full back to cover any hole left in the halves.

It's good that we're keeping the spot open. We'll see what comes up.

Hopoate and Percival have the first choice centre shirts.

So? How many times was Hopoate picked over Konrad this season? I don't see that changing.

Along with Welsby for a number 1 slot with a fit Dodd and Lomax freeing him up.

Why is that bobbins? If it becomes a policy to have a player and more cap space available for rainy days, that does mean your in house squad isn't as strong as it could be. What is wrong with saying that?

What you need to understand is that "when" Hopoate has played he has shown more skill with a sound defence better than Hurrell, good decision to sign Hurrell but an injury free Hopoate will always be first choice. If we get Dodd, Percival and Hopoate back for most of next season its like effectively signing 3 new players.

Possibly, but there were a few chances for Woolf to drop Hurrell for Hopoate last season and he didn't. It's Konrad's position to lose I feel, but I guess if Will gets in and out performs him we're onto a winner.

You can add Walmsley to that list too, he was crocked most the year albeit he made the pitch a lot more.

I think the point is even without signings we are as strong if not stronger than going into last year. We had a large amount of disruption in the group last season with 10 new faces in the senior squad, and there were still question marks about us potentially missing Fages and Coote (which Welsby and Dodd have well and truly silenced). If (and it’s a big if) we avoid the same luck as we had last year with injuries and suspensions, we should be putting out much stronger teams, and even if we don’t, the majority of the players who are coming in to replace them are the same but with another years experience and training under their belt.

If Grace had been staying, he would miss most of the year anyway and thus would be in the same position, yet up to the cap, so we’re in a stronger position than that.

This is how I see it too. The shirt numbers between Hopoate and Hurrell are irrelevant here. I think if we don’t sign anyone then we start the season with:

    Welsby
    Makinson
    Hurrell
    Percival
    Hopoate

There’s no way Hurrell gets dropped for that opening game, regardless of what number he has been given.

How many times did we have our first choice back line out? When Grace was out early on Hopoate was the 1 moved on to the wing because we had no other wing option. When Hopoate has been fit Hurrell hasn’t kept him out the side, because of Hopoates versatility hes played centre, wing and fullback, Hurrell can only play centre and at a push second row.
