Cracker, what a shift from Crooks
Paul Loughlin hugely overrated , but his dad was a nice guy .
I liked Lockers but I don't think he played his size.
Paul Loughlin was fantastic until injuries started to take their toll. He was the best winger's centre around for a while and Les Quirk had a field day outside him. However, from about 1990 to 1995, he very rarely delivered and often became a bit of a liability. He was clearly a confidence player and those injuries seemed to knock him mentally as well as physically. He actually was finally starting to find some form again when we sold him.

I started watching in ‘92-‘93 and I remember fans being frustrated with him then. A home derby the following year in which he had an an absolute shocker springs to mind. But IIRC he rediscovered some form in the ‘94-‘95 season before we shipped him to Bradford in the Newy deal.
Whatever his merits as a player (and I was always a fan) it's hard not to think he's the unluckiest player ever in Challenge Cup terms. Lots of great players never got to one final so to get to five sounds great, but to lose them all must have been sickening. Especially when he lost the first three with us and then we beat the club we shipped him out to in the next two!(And especially in '97, when he scored the try that briefly put them in the driving seat)
(Was really pleased for Bernard Dwyer when he got his winners medal in 2000, and of course Sonny Nickle came back and got his (v the Bulls again!) in 2001 - which kind of makes it even tougher on Lockers)
That Easter derby in 1994 was the one. He copped some terrible abuse after launching the ball into touch about six times. I think he did his shoulder a few times. I often wonder whether I judged him harshly now, because I doubt he was ever properly fit for a good few years. He'd actually become the Paul Loughlin of old in that few months before he left and there was no doubt that he was an outstanding centre in the latter part of the 1980s.
