    Default Man of Steel

Will it ever be possible for a Man of Steel to come from the forwards of a SuperLeague team, apart from Number 9 that is? Or will it always be the perceived playmaker as this year's nominations seem to suggest? Does the way the candidates are chosen need to be changed in order to make it fairer for all players to have a chance of winning the prestigious award? As a curiosity who are the players who should have won but did not in the Superleague era? Kieron Cunningham certainly springs to mind, and what about those who should have won it more than once, such as James Roby.
    Bringing it all back home.

It is an interesting thought. Players such as Jamie Peacock and Paul Sculthorpe won as dynamic forwards and it's probable they would be recognised by their peers in any voting if the current system were in place when they won the award

For me, Morgan Knowles is the epitome of a man of steel.

Man of Steel is meaningless under the current points system. How many Saints fans would have voted for Lomax as our player of the season, let alone one of the top 5 in the league?
Forwards win games. The backs decide by how much.

He probably should have had it last year or the one before. The way it is voted for is a farce. Oh to be a big fish in a small club.

My idea to simplify it and make it fairer would be for all 12 coaches to vote at the end of the season, with the condition that they can’t vote for one of their own players. You could trust the coaches to vote fairly (some players made a mockery of it when it was up to them) and the coaches see first hand which opposition players are regularly having the biggest influence on games. I’d be surprised if this supposed panel of experts actually watch the games properly that they’re judging on. They’ll watch the highlights and pick someone out based on very little.

The only issue would be how to decide if there was a tie. But apart from that I think it would be an extremely simple and fair way of doing it.

The current system massively benefits stand out players in poorer sides. Hence why (with all due respect) the likes of McShane has won it and Abdul is on the shortlist this year. Both decent players but not even close to being the best in competition.

As with most things associated with the RFL and/or Super League I don’t expect any logical changes from them. They’ll continue with a system that is clearly flawed.

Having said that, I expect Sam Tomkins to win it this year which nobody can really argue with. But even a broken clock is right twice a day…..

From that short list of 5, it is with regret I have to say Rat Boy probably the favourite, he's had a good season this year. For us Welsby should have been nominated over our Lomax.

    Probably in order:

    Tomkins
    Connor
    Abdull
    Widdop
    Lomax

Surely Welsby hasn't any competition for Young Player of the year?

I don’t know how lomax can be a contender to be honest . Yes a great player ,but as mentioned , MK is everything the MOS stands for .

I think Welsby will win it, his challengers I expect to be Mikey Lewis and Kai Pearce-Paul/Joe Shorrocks. I would have put Harry Newman in there but he missed so much of the season.

    Joe Shorrocks isn't even average.

He'll be at a bottom half club within a few years, though on current trajectory he might not need to leave Wigan for that.

Joe Exotic has more chance of winning than Joe Shorrocks.

Shorrocks!!! Last time we played Wigan I thought he was actually on the moon he was that slow out of acting half. Young player of the year, classic.

To be fair to Rogues the off season is a very dull time when you’ve been terrible all year and you’ve no hope for next season either!

Welsby is better than Young Player of the Year he should be on the short list for Man of Steel.

This just has to be clickbait, Shorrocks would not get a game in Saints ladies ( no offence to our ladies intended). If he is your idea of young player of the year, you really are deluded. You post as though you are the guru of upcoming stars of the future then show a complete lack of knowledge of what RL should be. Being well "ard and working hard and being able to flop on a tackle 20+ times a game does not a future star make.

Joe Banana's has more chance than Shorrocks - epitome of average. Not shit but hardly a threat either.
