Default 21 man squad v Hull FC

    https://www.saintsrlfc.com/2022/08/1...-hull-fc-trip/

    IN: Paasi, Matautia Simm Hopoate
    OUT: Sironen, Hill, Baxter, Pemberton

    1. Jack Welsby, 2. Tommy Makinson, 3. Will Hopoate, 6. Jonny Lomax, 8. Alex Walmsley, 9. James Roby, 10. Matty Lees, 11. Sione Mata’utia, 12. Joe Batchelor, 13. Morgan Knowles, 14. Joey Lussick, 15. LMS, 17. Agnatius Paasi, 19. Jake Wingfield, 20. James Bell, 21. Josh Simm, 22. Ben Davies, 23. Konrad Hurrell, 24. Dan Norman, 26. Sam Royle, 27. Jon Bennison.

Assuming everyone is fit, I would have a guess at:

    Hopoate
    Makinson
    Hurrell
    Matautia
    Bennison
    Welsby
    Lomax
    Walmsley
    Roby
    Lees
    Batchelor
    Bell
    Knowles

    Lussick
    Wingfield
    Paasi
    LMS

Norman, Royle, Davies and Simm to miss out.

If Hopoate doesn’t make it then Bennison to 1 and Simm to 5.

He could also stick with Davies at 4 and move Matautia to 2nd row but I don’t think (or hope) he will.

I'm happy with that team YG, would prefer Matautia in the second row but Bell is a good replacement. Shame Sironen is banned as he has been playing well recently.

I went to Wednesdays open training session and noticed at the end Hopoate was doing some contact / tackle work with a couple of our forwards, watched on by KW/Wello and physios. He looked fine.
Humans are more concerned with having than being.

Me too in an ideal world mate but for me Davies offers very little and so if you look at that left edge overall I think Matautia and Bell is a stronger pair than Davies and Matautia.

    As per the OP

Only question would be who the third sub would be, either Normal, Wingfield or even Royle.

Other than that, it all are available - team picks itself

That squad looks so much better than recent weeks.

Just hoping we can keep everyone fit now especially Hopoate and we can then finish the year strongly. Percival and Sironen coming back will hopefully boost us further.

Nice to see some of the familiar names back!

Looks a decent team that YG, I'd go with that.

Whatever the line up I just hope Davies gets nowhere near the team. Cant fault the kid for effort but lets face it he's been pretty awful in attack & defence (more than awful if i'm honest he's a liability in defence). Until Percy is back better to go with Mata'utia in the centres with Bell as left SR. Both are really strong defenders and in mata'utia's case more than capable of busting through the line to put his winger away.

Swap Wingfield and Bell around and you are probably on to a winner.

I would be tempted to give Royle or Norman to spell one of our forwards.
I could agree with you but then we would both be wrong.

Lovely to see the amount of stick Davies is getting, no more than 2 months after everyone was singing his praises against Cas.

Lets remember this is the first season he has played regular minutes, he's only our fourth choice centre (or even fifth if you count Matautia), and that he probably hasn't had the same combination inside/ outside him once all season, plus he has put his hand up to play in other positions for the good of the team, no doubt hindering his development at centre

He did OK in that first Cas game but wasn't exactly a stand-out (if anything Moss was the most impressive half back on the pitch that day). But he's been getting regular game time now, mostly in the centre and hasn't shown anything to suggest he's a Saints quality player. He's been caught out in defence a lot (both positionally and with his lack of pace to cover across), and I can't remember him breaking a single tackle or getting a single offload away to put his winger in space.
    He's a 10/10 for effort but i'm afraid about a 5/10 for skill & ability.

Must agree regarding Davies, he is either not ready or not good enough either way he should not be making the squad.

Davies or his agent have done really well managing to get a 2yr contract. He reminds me of a Haigh or Hall type.

He shed some timber and was bigged up by woolf.

In fairness to him he had great feedback from Salford.

However I'm just not seeing much beyond Matty Fleming or Costello.

I think he could develop as a batchelor type second row but he's not a centre and never a 6.

He's not terrible but Woolf raised expectations around him and has cleary written off Simm.
Therefore people have paid more attention to him and formed some judgements.

When you see the likes of gannon, tindell and co at Leeds there's no comparison.

Think Davies cops a fair bit of stick. He’s no world beater but he’s versatile and in a stupidly low salary capped sport, he’s going to come in handy. He’s played more this year than anyone would have liked.

According to Woolf he has a couple of niggles, which could be anything from a stubbed toe to a shark has chewed off his leg judging from Woolf's past usage of the term. I'm hoping he's just being rested seeing as he's featured in every game this season (IIRC).
