    Default Next Season's Goal Kicker

Who do you think will get the nod for goal kicking once Coote's left, Percy, Tommy or does Dodd kick?

I'm expecting Makinson, no need to put additional pressure on Dodd.

Don't think it will be Percy with all his hamstring problems.

Go with the best kicker, however old they are. Makinson looked good at the start of the season but was kicking through lack of other options and has had problematic foot injuries since. Percival likewise has kicked well in the past but more through necessity and with recurring leg injuries I wouldn't want him doing it on a regular basis. I've not personally seen Dodd kick goals much but from everything I've heard he is excellent at it. I'd give him first whack with Makinson and Percival as back up.

Hope Dodd is practicing his kicking during the off season?

I'd give it to Makinson. He's a great goalkicker

He is but I wonder if he’s a viable long term option after his foot injuries last year. I’d give it to Dodd personally.

Sorry you're right. Missed your first post. I'd forgotten about the problems he had with the foot injuries.

Felt like season only started in July for me as never had a season ticket

Dodd, I should imagine he is a better kicker than Coote or Makinson and his % success rate will most likely be higher.

I really liked Makinson's kicking last season, he really got some shape on his kicks to bend them in from the touchline

Yep. Off the right touchline, kicks them with a similar technique to that Thurston used. Which is very difficult to master

Last year was the best and most consistent I have seen him kick. Unless the coach thinks it is too much pressure on young shoulders, I would start with Dodd.

I would certainly like to see Tommy do the drop outs. He can launch them up to the half way which is what’s needed when you’re under pressure.

I'm with you Greg if Tommy can nearly hit a drop goal from 40yrds out in the last second of a GF then just think how far he can drop it without the pressure?

My mate was screaming at Coote to let Tommy kick the drop outs in the grand final to relieve a bit of pressure. It does baffle me that we don't do that.

If you've got a competent kicker at Full Back, they'll generally take drop outs and kick offs.

It's so the defensive line can push forward with the Full Back then hanging back to slot in to their organising role. You've got a fully set defensive line from tackle 1.

If you have somebody else taking kicks you are taking that player out of the line, plus the Full Back who still has to hold to organise the line after tackle 1. It's not just about who can kick it the furthest, but laying the best defensive platform for the set as a whole.
