I think whether Trueman gets selected depends on the make up of the squad. As I’ve mentioned previously, if they continue with 24 man squads for this tournament then there’s maybe only room for 3 reserve backs and players like Hardaker, Connor, Farnworth who can cover multiple positions may get the nod ahead of specialists.
As I mentioned just before, I think McShane is in the 17 right now based on Wane's comments at the weekend. I think the 9 jumper is Roby or Hodgson, and I think McShane is on the bench as the option against the tiring defences. I would pick Roby as well, he's a better player than Hodgson and has more about him. But if Wane wants a steady head at 9 only Hodgson fits the bill as competition for Roby IMO. McShane and Clark both fit the bill as the extra option off the bench and right now I think McShane has the spot.

I think the 3, 5 and 13 spots are interesting right now.

Wingers I’d go Makinson and Johnstone but wouldn’t be surprised to see McGilvary picked given his international record and kick return ability.

Centres clearly Percival has been the best English left centre over the last couple of seasons then it’s a shootout between Gildart, Farnworth and Hardaker for the right centre spot. If French stays fit and Hardaker spends the rest of the season back at centre I wouldn’t be surprised to see him get the shirt.

13 it depends on what Wane wants and where he sees Bateman, although he’s wearing 13 he still seems to be play 2nd row and I think that’s his best position. Whitehead, Bateman and Knowles as the back row for me. Maybe someone like Philbin on the bench to offer impact off the bench.
Forwards win games. The backs decide by how much.

I think Clarke is twice the player McShane is

Bit harsh on McShane that I reckon. I would say he actually has more guile/craft/creativity whatever you want to call it than Clark. But Clark is much more elusive and dangerous from dummy half with a quick PTB. They are two very different hookers in their style of play. Mcshane is more likely to open up a stubborn defence on the line but Clark can punish you in different ways if his forwards get a roll on, etc.

Yeah, agree with all of that. I'd have Bateman, Whitehead and Knowles 11-13 as well, but I think Knowles is the least secure of the three. Backline is Tomkins, Makinson and Percival at 1, 2 and 4 barring injuries, with 3 being as you said (Gildart or Farnworth) and 5 being wide open IMO. Johnstone gets the attention but McGilvary does have a decent track record at that level, and as a long shot I'm not ruling out Ryan Hall.

Greg Eden 2.0 for me. Scores a bucket full of walk ins playing outside a quality centre but an absolute liability otherwise.

Ash Handley? If there was someone who is over-rated, along with Luke Gale, it's him!

What will be interesting is how England develop over the tournament. In pretty much every other World Cup we’ve had games against Australia and occasionally NZ as well plus competitive PNG/Fiji teams in the group stage. This time we play Samoa, France and Greece before a QF against PNG most likely, maybe Wales. 4 games I’d expect us to win comfortably before a semi final against Tonga. Going from those 4 sides to a fired up Tonga is a bit of a jump, they’ll have to plan things right so they aren’t going in undercooked.

Plumped for 7 tickets for the SJP opener against Samoa as we have mates and family up there and it is something to look forward to. Tickets aren't cheap but look to be selling well. We're going to stay the weekend and watch Scotland v Italy on the Sunday at Kingston Park before heading back for Tonga v PNG at LP on the Tuesday. Quite looking forward to it all, should be a step up from previous World Cups with a bit more depth beyond the usual suspects.

Interesting that the Sky poll last night had Hardaker well above Tomkins for the England No.1 shirt. Now I imagine there were more Wiganers voting than other clubs fans because they were in the game, but Tomkins only got around 30 per cent.

I don't know if I misheard but I thought Carney and Clarke were having a conversation about Hastings being in the England squad. Makes a joke out of the whole thing

He's probably got an English Setter, which qualifies him to play.

I think the poll is meaningless when one of the candidates is playing for one of the teams on show.

If Leeds fans voted for Hardaker because he once played for them wouldn't Wiganers have done the same for Tomkins? As I said, a poll taken before a specific game where half the audience support just two teams does skew the result, but my point was only that Tomkins isn't a unanimous choice with fans across the board.

In fairness if Hardaker played a full season at full back he'd definitely be in with a shout, particularly if he kept up his current form. But it seems pretty clear from Lam's comments that he is going to be moved back to centre as soon as French is available. That being the case I can only really see Connor challenging Tomkins for the full back spot, and that's dependent on him keeping the shirt once Shaul is back fit.
