Don't they have irony in Wigan?

I broadly agree with Webbo's sentiments but I can still interact civilly evenly with pie eaters.

One of my problems with the 4 groups he mentions is that they have a shortage of humour & tolerance of other views.

PS just realised Yorkshire men need adding to the list....

If you have a problem with other peoples views perhaps you should be added to that list.

I know it should be 100% but there's good and bad everywhere.

I love our game and wherever possible try to take in the occasion with a few beers and often a stopover as much as possible.
Fact is most fans you can have a really good craic with. I generally stay in Wigan for beers after the game and always have banter and love it. Rarely if ever nasty.
Yes we have a rivalry and you can call it hatred but when it boils down to it we need each other to exist. Generally the vast majority of rival fans can have a beer and take the Mick.
The only fans I have always struggled with was Hull KR and Featherstone but I suppose there is time yet!
Wire not always been the best but they have many years of pent up anger!
Some need to lighten up a bit in their more mature years and enjoy the rivalry for what it is.

I agree on the Wigan it is usually good fun and entertaining after match celebration no matter who won, Wire always had a nasty element but since SL they are much better enjoyed Magic Weekend with them a while back. Dunno about KR or Fev but Castleford for me are the archetypical Gruff Yorkshire fans, over half a dozen times at various venues I have had seen rows, even after they put 50 on us in the CC back in 2017 not really celebrating with smiles but aggressive attitude. There is good and bad everywhere but for me their fans are the worst.

Wiganers are fine. Massive crowds and just the odd skirmish. Hull derbies they have nearly killed each other in the past and that is not an exaggeration.

Hull KR and Fev are the most like seventies football fans. HKR was policed as a football match would be. Wire and Salford on this side of the hill have had more than their moments. All in all RL has been pretty good.

Yeah agree seen some nasty stuff there years ago. Not sure it's quite as bad now.
Warrington have a high opinion of themselves for a club that have won so little. At least Wigan have the honours board to back it up like ourselves.

The irony is that in the late 70’s and early 80’s the trouble makers were usually those that went to Old Trafford on a Saturday and then go to Wilderspool on the Sunday (they often didn’t bother going to watch the match). These days my experience is that there may be a few idiots around but it certainly isn5 a major issue. ( yes I agree one incident is too many) every team has an idiot minority even, dare I say it, Saints.

It's a fair comment Wolfie that. For Warrington read Salford I commented on both and it was a bit of a Utd thing. Swinton had as many fans as Salford but never a murmur there. People forget Utd was really bad around that relegation era.

As a United fan from the early 70’s and going to plenty of games the fans where no angels but at the time every club had its fair share of lunatics, but for Wolfie and Cyprus to say that trouble in rugby was United fans fault , FFS .

We didn't say that exactly. What is factually correct is Man U and Leeds U had a section who would seek out aggro at RL games. Liverpool and Everton whilst having loons didn't deviate beyond football. I went to plenty of football in the same era, Everton V Millwall was as bad as it got, but I think Man U fans in the old division 2 took it to another level.

Yes Saints are no angels I have a mate who is a driver for Northern at Lime St and he hates the Saints away games at Wigan he said it's not too bad going but depending on the result the return journey is a nightmare. Every club has it's idiots but it sometimes takes non interested parties to make you realise how bad it sometimes is.

I wasn't around at that time. Being a Man Utd fan myself, what Cyprus & Wolfie say stacks up with what I've heard from matchgoers who went in the 70s. It's not having a go at Utd, just the way it was

As a teenager I was wary every time I went to an away game without an adult being present. I was well aware that we had more than our fair share of idiots who were looking for trouble. The days of “taking the kop “ before segregation.
As far as the Utd fans were concerned, a lot had been relocated to the “new town” area.I am not for one minute saying it was only football fans, what made me think of it was the posters username “mufcsaint” and hence the reference to irony!

Fans of your lot are the only ones who didn't want to talk to you before or after a game unless it was to insult you still the same now

Warrington, Castleford, Wakey & Hull KR are where I think it can get a bit unfriendly. Cas is fine on the way in but it often turns sour on the way off. Salford at the Willows always had an edge, particularly on a Friday night.

The one time I've really felt nervous was after the first game at Widnes in 2002. Think we won 15-14. It was pretty much a sell out. Was nasty that night. But never experienced that before or since at Widnes.

I'm well aware of the whoppers we have at games. We've got our fair share.

I've never understood why you'd want to make opposition feel welcome and vice versa. I'm not talking about having a beer before the game although I'd much rather be with my mates/own fans but certainly once in the ground I see them as the same as their team and insult/intimidate them is par for the course.

And yes, I have mates from other clubs who I can go for a drink with but generally because of either football or other interests.

It just goes to show how viewpoints are different. All those occasions where you beat us in the final seconds and gloated about it(as I would’ve probably done if the position were reversed) you shouldn’t be surprised if nobody wanted to chat with you.
I enjoy a chat with opposition fans before after and even during, but I usually wait to see if they seem reasonable or are totally one eyed before committing. As a rule I am usually modest about my teams chances even when overwhelming favourites given our history, no point making yourself a hostage to fortune!

    I'm not the gloating type
