    Default Grace signs new deal?

    https://www.therugbypaper.co.uk/late...mpression=true

It's being reported in the rugby paper that Grace has signed a new deal with us until the end of the 2022 season.

A bit worried that it is only for a year. Hopefully, we can tie him down to a longer contract, there is no one else in the league that can do what he can do. Does he have one eye on the 2023 RU World Cup?

Surely if he was genuinely hopeful of playing for Welsh RU he would have looked for a RU contact for next season? He’d need to prove himself at Union before being selected and having only part of one season to make an impact doesn’t seem enough to me. I wouldn’t blame him for taking an opportunity to play for Wales if he could because of the increased income and fame it would bring. However, it just doesn’t seem feasible.

    P. S. The fact he has signed is a great bit of news.

I think he’d be good in a sevens side.

I suspect it suits all parties for the time being, we've got him tied down in difficult financial times and he has options. I agree though, I'd have thought he'd need at least a full season playing Union to get called up.

I think had it not been for the emergence of Louis Rees-Zammit, Regan would have gone to RU by now. As it stands, they don't really need him

Style isn’t right and he isn’t big enough. A bit concerned it isn’t longer, he has made himself a key member of our team.

If I'm not mistaken haven't they been agreeing one year contracts with others?

Actually, yes. He'd be friggin amazing.

I'm personally hoping that the one-year extension is from a perspective of "next year, once the economic impact of Covid has hopefully worked through, we'll look to give you a meaty pay rise but, in the meantime, let's agree a year's extension to keep you at the club"

It does seem that way, just in case the sports future goes teets up.

Lot's of things can determine the length of the contract , none of which we really know.

Regan might want a crack at Union (World Cup/Lions).
He might be keeping his powder dry until more money becomes free on the cap.

The Club might be managing the impact of Covid and the new TV Deal.
That said they have given multi year deals to Walmsley and Lomax.

Only the club , Regan and his agent really know.

Great he is signed up for 2022.
We just need to ensure he gets a pass to get the most out of him.

I was just hoping it was what I said, rather than Grace saying "Well give me another year, then I'll want to explore other options".

WRT Walmsley & Lomax, they're already at their peaks, and their salaries will reflect that. I expect the new contracts are for the same salary as the last ones. For Grace, he's still on that upward curve of both playing ability and pay, so you'd assume he'd be looking for a decent rise with this contract but, with Covid, the club may well not be prepared to commit at this time, so a 12 month extension with the same salary or slight increase buys time for both parties to look at the longer term this time next year.

As you say, all just speculation (which is what half the posts on here are anyway!)

This explains the situation a bit more, sounds like he's keeping his options open a bit for next year, which you can't blame him for really

Also goes on to say Thompson is back this week and Batchelor passed all the head tests and is OK so injury situation maybe not as bad as 1st feared.

Makinson, Thomson. Batchelor all available along with Matautia so not as bad as feared after last Friday’s game. Interesting selection dilemma - where does Welsby play?

we can do with all the flying wingers we can get in wales , grace is from my area and my region were the one's that tried to get him along with the wru

I would have thought the money we offered would be bigger and he would be coming home, he played union for years as a kid so it's not that much of a learning curve for him and winger is the easiest position to transfer codes

Fair play to him he hasn't gone for the money and seems to genuinely love playing for st Helens, I dare say one day he will come back and hopefully it will be to the ospreys although I do wonder if he may try his hand out in the nrl before trying union

Anyhow wales loss is saints gain so I can cope with that

    I’d agree with this

Lots of trades (including my own) have frozen contracts and bonus’ based on a volatile market and uncertainty ahead.

    It’s sensible in all ways
