Yep, we clearly did a good job with Bentley albeit he was a lot younger . He will need to be moulded , hope he does well .

About the same age, size and weight as Walmsley when we signed him. Took a couple of years for him to really get up to speed so with a bit of patience hopefully he’ll do well. No pressure on him this season with 5 other props on the books. I imagine when Amor and LMS go at the end of next year we’ll probably sign another prop with Norman stepping up as well.
Forwards win games. The backs decide by how much.

The thing that made that so perfect was that they signed him at the same time we signed Lyon.

I may have this wrong but wasn't they all crowing at the time about them signing an international while we signed some fat kid from the bush. That didn't turn out too badly in the end.

If they did they must have been pretty ill informed. Lyon was an Aussie international at 19 i think. He gave it all up to pull pints and play for his local amateur team IIRC. Imagine having Lyon playing the equivalent of northwest counties. He probably played prop, scrum half and centre in the same game

That's how I remember it, he was sick of Sydney life and went back home. Clearly he quite liked it here, I used to see him out and about quite regular and he was always in high spirits shall we say, although a lot of those players from that era were fond of a drink or 2. I could post a few stories but they're not really for this place.

Why couldn't they have worked on Ashworth?

Maybe Woolf didn’t like his attitude or think he was worth the effort, especially following his court case.

Shit happens I guess, you never know how a player will turn out. Ashworth had/has plenty of potential but for whatever reason couldn't kick on with us, maybe he will at Huddersfield but I wouldn't hold my breath on that. To be fair to the club, we've replaced a youngish prop with another youngish prop who's bigger, younger and I'm sure has a point to prove.

I remember reading earlier in the year that since retiring he has been playing local ‘footy’, his team got to the grand final and he scored a hat trick in it.

The best bit about that was Maurice Lindsay declaring in the press he was off to Australia to sign Mark Gasnier.

Instead he came home with Vaeliki

We were linked repeatedly to Vaealiki in the RL media for weeks, and then the scum muscled in on the deal and signed him with much crowing (there was at least one article at the time quoting some pie smugly proclaiming that they'd beaten us to his signature). Straight after that we announced the signing of Lyon.

The story at the time (and it's one of those that you hope to the heavens is true) was that the Vaealiki rumours had been leaked by the club as a smokescreen for our top-secret negotiations with Lyon as we looked to tempt him back into the top-tier of the game.

I don't think having the scum sign Vaealiki was part of the plan, but it proved to be a magnificent cherry on the icing of a delicious cake.

I remember it along those lines. I'm assuming that was part of our perennial cheating.

Guess he was done the pecking order after Welsby and Simm.
Good luck to him. Thought he looked decent from what I saw of him

I like Costello. I met him a few times and he was always a sound grounded lad. On the field he did little wrong. Good luck to him.
