But some don't want them, but they'd be happy to spend money on something more classy and retro. Why would the club release anything other than replica shirts if they were worried about people spending their money on other things?
I don't think they are assuming that. My guess is that they're looking for the best return on their money, which I assume would be what we currently get.
Don't get me wrong. I like the idea of better made retro stuff, and there will be people like you who would buy into that, but aren't buying the new replicas.
The problems would start if too many people bought the retro's, then wore them for several years, rather than buying a replica each season.
They could obviously charge more for the retro's, but how much more would they need to charge to retain the cash flow balance?

The design (or lack of) that has gone into this new Saints "range" really is very disappointing. There is nothing about it that jumps out at you as being St.Helens RFC. It's basically stock O'Neills items with our badge sewn own, if that makes sense. There was one item out of the whole lot that I would buy, but apart from that it just all screamed bland to me. Hopefully they will come up with something much better with the kits but I won't hold my breath.

I tried searching yesterday for how long our agreement is with O'Neills but I had no joy. Anyone know? I saw that our sponsorship with Cash Converters is up at the end of 2021, I would love a new supplier and a new sponsor on board for 2022.
Totally agree; at a time when fan based income is vitally important, the club presents us with a very tired, bland offering.
I'm hoping the new shirts aren't a red vee on white - I really want to feel that I want to purchase one, but I think the club has to give us something innovative to generate the sales that are so desperately needed.

"The great fallacy is that the game is first and last about winning. It is nothing of the kind. The game is about glory, it is about doing things in style and with a flourish, about going out and beating the other lot, not waiting for them to die of boredom." Danny Blanchflower.

I understand your point, and maybe that's why they make those decisions, but I don't think it's correct. Shirts are mainly sold around Xmas, it is a key driver of revenue for the club. But release a retro every year in June for example. It won't bite into the replica market at Xmas in any real way. As I say, they sell all kinds of junk at pretty high prices (£30 for a polo) without worrying that people buying any of that merchandise will put them off buying a replica shirt as well, so why would they worry about people buying a retro jersey six months away from the next replica release being any different? They've just released a load of 'leisurewear' 7 weeks before Xmas, in the hope people will snap it up. If they worried about people choosing to buy other stuff other than the 2021 replica they wouldn't do that. So, I think the lack of any retro shirts is less to do with economic calculations and more to do with them not giving retro jerseys any real consideration.

Cheers, I didn't know this existed. But it leads to the question why they're flogging them and not the clubs?

I get the impression that they make the stuff. I don't know what mark-up would be needed if the club bought in bulk from someone like this, then sold them on to us.

They also do great good quality thick polo shirts ( of which I’ve already got 7) and whilst they do them for Wiga, Warrington, etc, they don’t yet do one for Saints

It's pretty crap, I normally end up buying some training gear but I'm not sold on any of it.

I don’t like O Neil’s quality anyway but it’s clear that no one has had the foresight to do anything differently.

We mock Wigan for their badge (and rightly so) but their new kit and training range is very different and to be fair their social media channels have certainly hammered the content..I guarantee their new kit will sell really well, even if it does look like Salford’s.

We get a couple of cheesy pictures of Makinson and Grace and a tweet advertising the range. Oh and the chance to win some as long as we tag friends.

I remember a few years ago we brought out a summer range, a lime green banding around it which I loved and actually bought a few things.

This new range looks tired and lazy.

I've long disliked O'Neils so no surprise I concur; the quality is generally naff and their designs fluctuate between struggling GCSE Graphic Design student and 1980's Communist bloc sport apparel. The latest offering looks like the latter.

I'm not sure the deal with O'Neils makes much sense if you end up alienating your customers because its shit. Even their core market - GAA - looks decades out of date.

I normally buy a couple of Polo shirts each year but nothing on the website that I would bother with. Though I may have a change of heart later.

Home shirt comes out on Monday. Presume they’ll announce the away kit at the same time.

Few new decent designs released at the weekend, is the vee design on the hoodies and vests a sign of what the shirt might look like??

Interesting that the O'Neills website doesn't have us down as one of the clubs that they supply kit to, but do show Catalan Dragons?

Is that because Saints have exclusivity over where the kits are sold? Whereas Catalans won't their own shop over here so this is a way of people in the UK purchasing them? Just a guess.

That isn’t a list of clubs they supply, it’s the list of clubs with a shop within the O’Neills website where you can buy direct from O’Neills. Warrington are not on there either.

Oh, I like it. Very nice. Don’t normally buy a shirt but that’s one of our better ones for a long, long time. That said, it’s a crap tribute to sixty years of the vee.

Nothing earth shattering, there again, if you're going with the red V there's not a great deal of scope with what you can do. I like it and will be buying one as usual. I was fearing a really thin red V, but as we now know my fears were unfounded. Anyone know when the away kit is put? Someone told me it's black with some red markings on the left shoulder, don't know how true that is though.

Predominantly white with a red vee, white shorts, a massive step up from what we've had this season. I like it.
