Anyone remember Peter Shields he was a good player for us who came to us and nobody had heard of him. And that try for him with that pass over his shoulder from Tommy Martyn. Orgasmic.
Dave Chisnall anyone? his best days behind him but he did a solid job in a struggling Saints team as a veteran and cheap signing.
I think we exchanged Steve Rule for Clive Griffiths, Clive was a big money union convert who didn't really convert. Pretty poor was Clive.
gibbs was coming off a long injury following a serious knee injury so that proably didn't help his fitness, he was always a class player as he proved when fit
Paul Anderson coote and Mcvey were excellent signings who I didn't expect that much from, but lyon has to be the top pick
The guy was superb for St Helens and must be one the best buys the club has ever made
When is the counter thread starting? Signings U were totally underwhelmed with?
I known its an obvious one but Paulo, hes been nothing but below average.
Ricky Cowans.
And his gobshite son who took a slap.
Mike Carrington
Well Ricky was a 20 stone giant oaf and his son went to school with a mate of mine who lived down our street, anyway, matey boy shoved my brother off his bike or something then tried to defend himself with a piece of wood when I went to remonstrate. Turns out he was a better at picking on kids smaller than him than he was fighting someone his own size. I don't think my Dad was best pleased at possibly having the oaf turn up at our house but nothing happened in the end.
I think he was the most disappointing because of his reputation, he was regarded in Australia a one of the greats of either code and he was signed as a replacement for Meninga who had broken his arm.
We obviously expected great things of him but it seemed as if he didn't want to be here
In his defence signing a 18 stone prop from union whose game was based on scrimmaging and who had dodgy ankles was never going to work well
I seem to remember Barry Ward must have been from the school of dieting as our stuart
Travis Burns was another who failed to shine for us to say the least
Barry Ward was at least entertaining and could do a bit if only for short spells.
You're right about Travis Burns although he was a nice bloke. I remember meeting him in the 7 stars not long after he'd signed, he'd been playing golf with 2 other Aussie blokes and it was bloody cold outside and we had a bit of craic about the weather and the fact he had about 15 layers on. He seemed to have a strong liking for Guinness and ploughed through a mixed grill in minutes. As I say though, nice bloke, happy to pose for pictures with everyone who asked and no hint of bother everytime I seen him.
Getting back to the original question, Peter Souto. I think we signed him from Fulham/London.
Only played about 10 games for us but I remember him having a blinder in the mud of Central Park in the 88 Regal Trophy Final
