The sky TV deal was Massive early on, a quick Google search estimates it to be 87m, which is about £170m in today's money.

It is always a fine line between success and failure, the blueprint is not exclusive to any team or club, the timing matters. We had the nucleus of a very good team in 1995.
SL came at a perfect time for us, we paid a world record for a back (after selling a similar one a few years before for less) Keiron was turning into one of the World`s best forwards, Bobby was on top of his game, Joynty came back from Aus with his head on and mind made up to stay with us, the underated Scott Gibbs was finally RL fit, Sully, Hunte, Apollo, Heyes, Briers, Prescott, would all get in any team back then. Bomber came on board with McVey who was a good fit for a couple of seasons, later we broke a World record for a forward with Scully, seamless transfers, Long, Talau and Albert it all looked rosy. Behind the scenes if the rumours are to be believed we were close to bankruptcy ourselves.
We were lucky Makker came along when he did and put the structures in place or our former players would have been ringing cap in hand for help.
No one has mentioned we were also going to spend big on Iestyn Harris to until Alex Murphy blocked the move. I can't remember the figure but I'm sure it was over £300,000.
Fortunately for us we decided to take a chance on Sean Long instead who had left wigan following an issue

Yes interesting times. In 1997 bobbie had been sent off in the first round v Wigan and got a huge ban. Lee Briers came into the team until Bobbie was back and then was sold to Warrington. After Wembley our form collapsed as did the number of fit players. I think Bobbie got the capacity removed and got sent off again. With the start of the world club challenge series we desperately needed a scrum half so Long joined from Widnes - who were in the league below. Longy made his debut v Cronulla Sharks I still recall one of his first attempts at goal in that game he was so nervous.

Whispering this but Joel looks a very good player after watching this game today.

Shout it from the rooftops. I’ve long been a fan. He will bolster your team. Tough as nails. Originally with Canberra, then some stellar seasons with St George. Manly’s the loser here. He’s a top bloke to boot. Does a lot of charity work.
Just discovered smilies don't work on here
