    Default 2021 - Player Review

Thought it's be interesting to see how others scored each of the players out of ten for the season. Only criteria is that they must have played at least 3 games. My own thoughts would be:

    Lachlan Coote – 8
Slow start to the season but rediscovered his form as the season progressed. Not quite as pivotal in attack as in the previous couple of years but so solid at the back and his organising of the defence remains brilliant.

    Tommy Makinson – 7
Tenacious as ever as the consummate all-round winger. Fewer opportunities to show his attacking/running skills.

    Kevin Naiqama – 7½
Brilliant MoM performance in the Grand Final capped off a typically solid season for a player who always pulls it out more for the big games.

    Mark Percival – 7
Season a little disjointed by injuries, but overall a strong return after almost a season out last year. Not as many breaks as pre-injury but that try against Wire…

    Regan Grace – 7½
Electric when has a bit of space (which is still sadly not often enough) and the best broken-field player in SL, but has also come on leaps and bounds in defence and positioning.

    Jonny Lomax – 6½
Less effective individually in attack, but defence still superb. A totally professional display in the Grand Final, and has helped Dodd settle in seemlessly.

    Theo Fages – 6
A true warrior with a defence that’s peerless for a halfback. The CCF performance was both great and gritty, but missed the run-in through injury.

    Alex Walmsley – 9
Another with a slow start to the season, but went on to show he’s clearly the best prop in SL by a mile. Some unbelievable displays of power running.

    James Roby – 7½
Just keeps going. At times looked a little struggling, but in some games – including big ones - rolled back the years with masterclass performances.

    Matty Lees – 6½
A solid season, interrupted by an ankle injury for a player unluckier than most. Defensively superb, but still a little limited in impact with ball in hand.

    Joel Thompson – 5
A disappointment overall, after his body let him down; one season too far. Gracious enough to recognise this and not string the club along, and improved in the 2nd half of the season, putting in a strong performance in the CCF.

    James Bentley – 6
Looking good before the bad injury, then went ‘nutcase’ after returning, niggling and slamming opposition players in equal measure, but falling foul of refs.

    Morgan Knowles – 8½
Quietly went about his business of absolutely smashing opposition ball carriers in the middle. But also handy with the ball in hand when required. A brilliant player.

    Sione Mata’utia – 6½
Patchy start to his Saints career with some fans beginning to grumble, but came on strong as the season wore on with great defence and strong running in the channels, plus some ball-playing ability. I’m expecting big things next year.

    Louie McCarthy-Scarsbrook – 6½
The Joker is showing his age a little, but still delivers punch and still gets under the skin of opposition players and fans alike.

    Kyle Amor – 6
A reliable back-up that trundles the ball in and makes yards after collision.

    Agnatius Paasi – 6½
Mixed bag of performances, sometimes looking brilliant/sometimes passive, but improved consistency toward the latter end of the season to help prevent too much of a drop-off in intensity when Walmsley goes off.

    Jack Welsby – 9
Late last season showed what he’s capable of, and he not only carried that on this season, but elevated it further. His progression has been amazing. Puts doubt in the minds of defenders and has both a great rugby brain and ability to time a pass. Superb talent.

    Aaron Smith – 5
Not too many chances, and when his did get on the field did a solid job but nothing more, lacking zip from DH (but maybe just following instructions)

    Joe Batchelor – 7
Such a brilliant progression from a player who looked a little more than squad-filler, to nailing down the right-SR spot with a series of strong performances that defied many expectations, capped by a great GF.

    Lewis Dodd – 7
A lot of hype around the lad from an early age, and introduced slowly. But looks to have both the skill and the confidence to make the 7 shirt his own.

    Josh Simm – 5
Like Smith, very limited chances. Despite there definitely being *something* there in terms of talent, needs to step up if he’s to make it.

Tend to agree with all of these scores with the exception of James Roby.
I think we've become used to the quality displays he puts in, week in, week out and it's become the norm.
So if your scoring him against last season, yes, he's probably dropped a bit, but that's probably from a 9.5 to an 8.5.

    Coote - 8
    Makinson - 8
    Naiqama - 8
    Percival - 8
    Grace - 8
    Lomax - 8
    Fages - 7
    Walmsley - 9
    Roby - 9
    Lees - 7
Matautia - 7 (but much more impressive at second row)
    Thompson - 4
    Knowles - 9

    LMS - 8
    Paasi - 7
    Amor - 6
    Batchelor - 7
    Bentley - 6
    Dodd - 7
    Welsby - 9

Paasi started to show what he’s capable of and will be better next year. Matautia also, far better at second row than in the middle.

Batchelor most improved, pushing on an 8.

Find it hard to score below 8 on most of the team. Majority of the team are amongst the very best if not the best in their positions.

If Dodd is a 7 then Lomax before he got injured must be more than a 6.5 was a shoe in for MOS early on.

Our Wingers & Centers deserve another point.

But other than that i'd agree with rest.

I think its hard to judge Smith, and especially, Simm based in the lack of gametime they had, i dont think Roby can be classed as anything below a 7. Dodd has slotted in extremely well and could easily get another 1/2 point at least, and Matty Lees still looks a bit lightweight as a prop for me.

It's difficult to be fully objective in terms of comparing performances just with other players, because there's a subconscious comparing to previous performances of the same player (ie, Lomax probably does deserve more than 6.5 but when compared to previous Lomax seasons (that have been up at the '9' range, then perhaps not)

I'm with Webbo on pretty much all of his scores. In fact, the only one I'd change is to give Walmsley an 8½ on the account of his struggles in the first half of the season. I honestly think that bar the first five games, Lomax was average all season. I'd have given him the same 6½ mark.

Walmsleys a tough one. I was critical of him first half the year. He was struggling and walking round hands on hips most games. Possibly injury related to be fair. Second half of the season he has been a man mountain and thats the trophy end of the season. Without his efforts over the last few months it would have been tougher getting the big wins.

I would give them all a 10 out of 10 it’s an example to the rest of superleague it’s a team game effort and not individuals and that’s why it’s 3 on the trot as superleague champions.

And I would agree. Each player had a role to play and played it to perfection.

Other clubs will talk themselves up saying that their pack or their backs or their starting 13 or their 17 are as good as us but no-one comes close to having as strong a squad as us and that’s one of the main reasons we are triple champions.
Forwards win games. The backs decide by how much.

A good thread that should get some interesting discussions rather than bitching. I think your bullet points are pretty spot on. I would put TM as equal to Kevin N over the season whether it is a 7 or 7.5. I would give Matty Lees a 7 and Batchelor a 7.5.

I'd agree with Webbo's scores in the main. I think the upping of scores we talk about is because of our memories are all of the run-in to the final and we tend to overlook the poor starts or slumps mid-season that some players had, and tbf Webbo seems to have taken account of those factors.

It's not a bad effort, but some are too low. The criticism of Lomax is ridiculous. He's a class player and always has been for us. This season he was targeted early on because teams knew everything went through him. Shut him down and Theo didn't offer much and we struggled a bit.

I think some players have been excellent when they have played. Percival and Bentley the obvious ones. They weren't on the field very much but when they were they were both sensational. Batchelor is one that probably deserves a higher rating. He's gone from being a player none of us thought would be retained to being a non-debatable starter for the back to back to back champions. The boy needs some credit for that. Paasi too has been very solid for a first season in Super League.

Blimey, Saddened, this is not like your usual gloomy self. Maybe we're all still basking in the glow of being champions and Challenge Cup winners. I endorse all of this.

A few observations on some players.

Makinson. Tommy has had a very strange season. He seems to be doing increasingly odd things. His red card on Niall Evalds being one obvious stand out. I just find myself nervous now that he is going to do something stupid. The rest of his game has been spot on.

Lomax. I feel that Jonny has got some unfair reviews on here. He has consistently provided try assists and is becoming more of a ball player than a runner. He has also had two different half back partners this year which must have been difficult.

Passi. Iggy we on week doesnt see to run his weight however his best two games have been the cup final and the grand final. He seems to show up in the big games and for that you have to give him credit. You feel like he could really kick on next year if the season is less interrupted with Covid.

Matautia. Sione has had one of the most split seasons I can remember. The first half was very ordinary then around Leigh at home/the cup final he has been one of our best players. I guess this is down to him getting the left edge position from Thompson that really suits him.
I could agree with you but then we would both be wrong.

I think the problem is that Woolf has coached more intensity and bigger hits in the second half of the season, the players have bought into the trademark of ruthless defence. However if the timing is off it appears reckless and it’s brobably given us a reputation with the refs.

Makinson, Lomax, Passi and Matautia are big hitters now in our team alongside Knowles.

I'd probably give Batchelor a 7.5 and Matautia a 7 but other than that I'd say you're pretty much on the money.

Makinson, Lomax, Passi and Matautia are big hitters now in our team alongside Knowles.
I think that is fair enough. Some players do know how to stay the correct side of the line. I am not sure if Tommy is one of them.
I could agree with you but then we would both be wrong.

Hmmm, Batch has had a great season but I do feel some are getting a bit carried away. If this is the 1996 Saints side, Batch is Simon Booth. Greatly improved and dependable.

Makinson's being (IMO) unfairly maligned a bit. There's been perhaps a couple of naughty shots this season, but the GF hit on Yaha is what is sticking in people's minds. Yet there wasn't any malice in that. He was sprinting across to tackle him as Yaha gathers the chip. Makinson starts to shape into the hit just as Yaha begins to stoop low. If Yaha doesn't do that, Makinson hits him about mid-level of his torso. Even with Yaha stooping, Makinson's first contact is on the shoulder; the speed he's running and force of the hit, coupled with Yaha's continuing to stoop further, bouncing the arm into Yaha's head.

Penalty, yes, but nothing in it.

I know this is not necessarily the thread to make the following comment in but given the dominance of Saints over several seasons now and the talent and potential of the players available to Woolf does the following statement by Leeds new NZ signing Fusitu'a hold water? "Leeds play an exciting brand of rugby league and I am excited to come over and be a part of that."
    Bringing it all back home.
