    Default Joel Thompson

Matt Shaw (journo) reporting that we've agreed a deal with Manly to sign 31 year old 2nd rower Joel Thompson for next season.

Be able to read it in league express so I've no link to the article. Just seen the news on twitter.

    Anyone know much about him?

I don't mate but 31 years old? That pack of ours needs young blood in it, and I don't mean Sydney.

I would take quality over age any time. I'm not saying a know a lot about him,but Zeb ( and many others ) has proven that age is no real handicap.

When did we last sign a stand out NRL forward . I was hoping Wolfe would use his Tongan contacts .

I did here we was after proctor. Personally he would be my pick of the second rows. We only need tamou (prop) and id like us to sign someone to cover the backs and i would be happy next year. Think we are light in the halfs and outside backs

I'm just watching Manly V Canterbury, he looks solid enough in defense but doesn't seem to run the ball much.

I have had a bad few days so not kept up with the news. Have saints confirmed the signing or that Zeb is going? Be really sorry to see him go if it's true.

That is the problem, no obvious candidates who are "One of the teenagers". Foster and Wingfield are the only junior backrowers in the squad and neither have any games under there belts or race reviews.

Outside of the existing starters in the back row. There is Bentley, if he re-signs, is soon going to be a starter.

Ashworth you can argue is more a backrower than a prop, but we are reaching there.

Batchelor doesn't look up to it, so that is kinda it.
I could agree with you but then we would both be wrong.

Here's the official NRL websites story https://www.nrl.com/news/2020/06/15/...elens-in-2021/ Have always rated him myself ( I do watch a lot of NRL) - as usual it will all depend on how Saints use him, a similar player is Jackson at the Bulldogs - they both do a great job for their clubs but arent "back page stars"

No sorry didn't mean that, 'one for the teenagers' was in response to a mention of eighties pop flash in the pan Sidney Youngblood.. Don't worry most people won't have even noticed or know who he is for that matter..

Thankfully some of us are of an age to remember Sydney. Also those of us who still frequent Wilfs for your haircut, they are calling it a day.

Wingfield is a real good player good brain can kick also to. Watch this kid a lot. He’s had a knee reconstruction last year I think could still be injured. Can play a few positions. He’s Allways been a 9 but plays 13 now also played 6-7 a lot for Academy. He also signed at parramatta to when his family emigrated to Sydney. Hopefully see him get some game time this year.

Peyroux, Taia and Bentley all off contract at the end of the season. This would suggest at least one is leaving.
Forwards win games. The backs decide by how much.

Made 96, 93, 147, 114 and 99 metres this year. Big lad as well.

Suffers from bipolar, not that that matters about his ability to play the game, he had a pop at a journalist recently for a pretty crass and offensive article about mental health.

100 metres for an 80 minute player isn't that big a number. His stats from the weekend of 99m and 22 tackles aren't exactly a high work rate.

Players like Yeo, Lane and Matterson are doing double that in the same position.

I can't say I'm thrilled at his signing to be honest. He doesn't seem to have the skill Taia does with the ball and isn't really a grafter.

It depends. If those 22 tackles hurt or dominate the ball carrier it's a decent workrate. There's a few Aussies on Twitter saying he's as good as any backrower to move to Super League and he'll be very good here. It doesn't sound like a bad signing for me, certainly at least a like for like with Taia. How do his stats match up to those Thompson is doing in the NRL?

Taia averaged more metres and a similar number of tackles. I don't know if he played 80 mins though.

Watching Thompson most weeks I feel like he has nothing like the attacking threat Zeb gives us, but will happily be wrong.

He describes himself as a coach killer, read into that what you wish

He’s a quality player playing for one of the better NRL teams getting loads of game time.
    Keep the faith
