Go-on Buffer !!!
The good old days.I think Roy Haggerty and Paul Forber would be stars in today’s game.
Big thankyou for providing the link to this absolute corker of a game.
The Saints were struggling with injuries and missing around 7 first teamers, add to that the kiwis had beaten saints the previous season by around 40points which meant it was virtually mission impossible.
The game was littered with errors and penalties but the second half comeback produced some glorious football in front of a crowd which produced an electric atmosphere that lifted the team to victory.
Just wish Langtree could produce that kind of noise.
Those were the days when they opened up the turnstiles so anyone could stroll into the ground halfway through the second half. My Dad would come and pick me up sometimes but was never tempted to actually walk in and watch the last 10-15 minutes, except this game. He told me he'd arrived early and could hear the noise from half way down Dunriding so got out the car to walk up. This is a man who never bothered doing this on numerous Boxing Days or Good Fridays so it must have been a half decent atmosphere!
To be honest though, I remember this game more for the performance and the result than the atmosphere.
Epic game and great way to pass some “indoor” time...
Some great rugby being played. Haggs and Forbs were class...Some other players had big games too - Veivers, Coops, Holding and Bostik Bailey has great games..
The Dave Tanner try was absolutely magnificent - about 1h 4m on the video...
I used to have a BBC video of this tour (it sat on my shelf next to '101 Great Rugby League Tries'). Hearing Keith Macklin say 'Eeero' brings back some memories.
I couldn't believe how many penalties there were & how untidy were the play the balls back then.
Great game. Who was missing?.cant remember
Thought Murphys suit was class
Evans fantastic. I must say though the crowd was of a size that would be a catastrophe at Langtree Park now. Error count didn't matter too much in those days. Good look back. Commentary excellent and no apologies for industrial language.
I remember the game well. My biggest memory was going back to work at Parkside and giving it to the Pie Eaters who all, to a man, were saying it was going to be a record score.
I was able to escort a handful of the Kiwis on a tour underground (being sponsored by British Coal). We were giving them shit. None of the main stream players came to the visit as the coach had them training for the first test and they had had a terrible start to the tour. I tried to get the picture of myself and the other guys who had accompanied them on the tour when the pit shut. No luck.....bugger.
thanks for posting that , it must have been the full New Zealand team and what a team . Just one compliment for Saints players when all the team deserves it , Stuart Evans who in his time had some stick , what a game he had.
Must admit that I found the quality of rugby very poor and would probably only want Cooper and Hunte in today’s squad although I always admired Haggerty for his effort so might also make room for him. The rest were far worse than I recall them being at the time.
PS Was that the only time that Bailey passed the ball while turning out for Saints and with Jones also on the pitch there was little chance of the ball reaching the wingers?
