No he didnt but that was only because Long was such a great player. No matter how much Briers improved, he was always behind Long. The worry for me is Richardson has the potential to be a better player than Fages. We were lucky that we had 2 great halves and Briers in reserve. No such luxury these days but hearing/seeing great things about Dodd.

It did, especially towards the back end of his career.

Good point. I'd have liked to keep Richardson. I do think he will be a very good player in a few years. Unfortunately in a heavily Salary Capped sport we didn't have that luxury.

    Potential- what is it?
Paul Darbyshire had the ‘potenshul’ to be better than Paul Sculthorpe, Lee Briers had the ‘potenshul’ to be better than Sean Long, Gary Wheeler had the ‘potenshul’ to be better than Jonny Lomax as did Lee Gaskell.

People think they see a flash of ability in a player and jump to a conclusion they are the next Murphy, Hanley etc. All I saw in Richardson was a yellow belly who whiffed at key tackles, made an irratating record of thick as a plank last tackle plays and had an allergy to taking on the line.

He wasn’t a player who had a few games. He was as Shane Warne said about Monty Panesar a player who looked like he was playing his first game thirty times. I’m glad we got rid.

I suspect that Dodd is a big part of the reasoning in letting him go, and it’s not as simple as Richardson v Fages.

    Default So Farges then?

But....who would you you pick at scrum half?

For me they are both very good players in that position with highly differing styles. Richardson plays much further back from the gain line so you tend to see what he does. Farges is much closer to the gain line and the amount of time he has is to play is greatly reduced. Because of this you just don't see his influence.

Farges makes the gaps whereas Richardson puts players into holes to make their own gaps.

Farges' position close to the line makes the space and time for the second receiver which is why Lomax is so pivotal to the attack.

If you want Lomax to be able to play in that style you need a Farge type of scrum half.

And in this time of enforced reflection take heart that we were only a few handling blips and timing errors from our usual style. Any elite sport is played at an incredible place and the difference between success and failure is a tiny margin.

Keep the faith, stay healthy and look forward to the return of the Saints

    good discussion.

The point is who would you have on the field.

Whilst the comments on personality or all very well its what on the field that counts. Some of those great SH's of the past ( I'm thinking Murphy) were not universally liked even if they were admired.

If you could combine Fages’ good bits with Richardson’s good bits, you’d have a fantastic player on your hands. Instead, we have two players with different strengths and weaknesses, though both are good at their jobs. It depends what you want from your scrum half really.

You're surely not suggesting Richardson should mentioned alongside Murphy? I get your point, in days gone by lots of SH's had a bit of "edge" about them but that isn't the case so much anymore. In any case, Richardson just comes across as a bit of softy with a chip on his shoulder to me, not to say that he doesn't have ability, just not a great deal of bottle. Fages, although perhaps not as naturally gifted has tons of bottle, isn't afraid to take a smack and can play in various positions if needed.

This sums it up for me. When things are going well, Richardson can be outstanding. But when the chips are down, you'd always want Fages.

The days of a dedicated specialist scrum half are gone now really. Each team usually has split halves with each having their own side of the pitch, with the fullback looping round the back.

Spot on. Only thing I’d add is full backs also play a key organisational / play making role on the wedge ‘round the back’ in the modern game; they are critical to how successfully an attack functions.

Some people seem trapped in the view that a good scrum half should and does function like an Andy Gregory or Bobbie Goulding and barking instructions like a (tired cliche alert) midfield general. Those days are well gone.

Nb - sorry reread your post and seen you made the point anyway; we both agree anyway...
