Default Advice for pubs 2 visit Sat 22nd Feb/WCC

Very rarely get to drink when I go to the match as I’m usually driving (except Good Friday when someone else does it) and if I do it’s at the ground.

For the WCC Me and a mate have booked to stay in a hotel at Haydock for the WCC and then going for beers before the match and i could do with some guidance of where to go?

We plan on getting int St Helens mid afternoon (3 ish?) and would like to have a bit of a pub crawl.

Can you point me in the right direction please?

If you are starting 3ish then
Turks Head/Cowley vaults on Cooper Street
Down the hill to the Talbot
    Past Asda to the Cricketers
Then head towards the ground and last pub before the match
    The Alfred opposite the station

    Then stagger to the ground

Thanks guys, will probably just grab some kind of snack food from the Tesco or whatever.

Is there anywhere else worth a beer?

I'd go with those bostik gave you. If it's open, upstairs in the Turks is a good start, the tower lounge. Then

    Cricketers
    Java
    Market
    George

That's a decent crawl to the ground.

Add the Gerrard to the start if you want another one

Fit The News Room in after The Talbot and that's an excellent route!

It has. So has Punch Tarmey's I believe.

As mentioned The Turks is a good start and then mooch into town or go via The Talbot, Cricks, Glasshouse, George, Royal Albert are all decent enough.

The Turks and the Cricketers are the ones to keep on that list in my opinion.

    Some classics there.

I often wondered if the Wetherspoons guy walked into Buzbys one day and thought.. this is the kind of ambience I want to create in all my pubs. If so he certainly has succeeded.

Oooh right cheers pal. I went in when it was Maloneys about 2004 ish.

I was a Syndicate regular in Blackpool. Used to love it in there because I was into my trance.

Had many a decent night out in town when I was younger. It's gone downhill at a rate of knots. I think the new licensing laws and the recession pretty much killed it.

Wonder if we can get the Roosters team on a friday night St Helen's pub tour???

Martine's was a moody dump, when it changed to Maloneys we used to meet in there on a Friday after work and sometimes go in after games, there were a few messy nights.

I remember that Syndicate, they tried to spin it as Blackpools answer to Gatecrasher but it never lived up to it, it probably opened a bit late as dance music started to go crap by the mid 2000's, for me anyway.

Martine's was amusing that it had a mirrored wall to make it look bigger, very drunk people wouldn't realise and would almost walk into it. It became a lap dancing club for a very short period of time before becoming Maloneys but not many people remember that as it must have only been open for a month

Crystals was always the most entertaining place for me, the sights I saw in there!

The nightclub era is effectively over now, in the UK I think more than half have closed in the last 10 or 15 years or so. Even at town like St Helens used to have 5 or 6 when I was growing up but I'm not sure there any left now at all?

The clubs we used to visit on coach trips (Peppermint Place, Tokyo Joes, The Palace in Blackpool) surely must all be well gone now? Definitely the Palace anyway as that building had been completely gutted last time I was in Blackpool

Tokyo Joes was in Preston wasn't it? Me and my mate went there and missed the bus back as we were "on a promise" with 2 student birds who promptly vanished and we had sit at the station for the first train home. There used to be another in Wigan right near the ground that ran coaches from town, used to quite like that but could be dangerous as it always felt like St Helens v Wigan.

Yeah Tokes was in Preston, Peppermint Place was in Blackburn if I remember correctly. We used to go some proper strange places

I think my mates and my brother may have been to that one in Wigan - Kudos was it?
