What a phenomenal player he has been for club and country.
I look at the GB team with him not in it and think ‘who is our enforcer’, we haven’t got one.
One of the very best to play the game, massive loss.
Absolutely gutted I won't get to see this guy rip it up against the Ozzies ever again.
Became one of the best British players of all time for me.
Good luck to him in his next chapter.
Sorry. Didn't see this thread.
Yep. Absolutely beast of a player. One of my favourite players to watch no matter who he was playing for.
Thompson to Souths then?
Like the Matty Lees injury, perhaps time again for us all to reflect how these guys put their bodies on the line week in week out...And what the consequences can be.
Nicely put from John Bateman.
Why does it look like they are about to embrace in some kind of romantic kiss
Such a shame, was a fantastic player. The grand final win in 2014 with a fractured cheek AND man of the match was unbelievable.
The documentary about him is really good, it’s on YouTube if you haven’t seen it https://youtu.be/qNVUwyFox5s
Can't stop the spirits when they need you.
This life is more than just a read through.
Yep. That was my first real memory of Burgess. Frodsham was a big lad and at 18 a good prospect. Burgess, who was also 18 at the time IIRC, absolutely brutalised him, and we hardly saw anything of him after that.
It's a shame that the NRL is so dominant that he spent most of his career over there. One of the great British forwards of all time and most of us only got to see him play a handful of times.
Incredible player and an even better competitor. Wish him all the best in retirement.

It is a shame for him and from an England point of view. He has had some off the field issues which he can focus on now, out of the limelight.
I have read that Burgess wanted to get his shoulder operated on in the USA but Souths weren't keen. I would guess that they want an insurance payment and him off the cap. Hopefully Sam can have his operation and reevaluate once recovered.
I think players have a limited time playing. He was a first team player from a very young age. As was Paul Sculthorpe who also retired early. This is especially the case in the NRL these days.
Tyson Frizell, apparently.
I never subscribed to that Burgess finished Frodsham nonsense. Gareth had injury problems before and he had issues after that happened. Unfortunately his body just wasn't up to it (see Gary Wheeler).
Also, some players are just big for their age group and can't handle it when playing against players the same size as them (see Ste Tyrer).

I could agree with you but then we would both be wrong.
