Default Being A Saint's Player Effect...

We've had plenty of established players signed for Saints from other super league clubs, some have taken the "Saints Effect" and become better players because of it, others have not lived up to their reputation and have not measured up performance, improvement and contribution wise.

Who in your opinion have been our top 3 UK established super league signings, fans on here will see it from a variable viewpoint, I have purposely left out the obvious Paul Newlove. I suppose we could also comment on the 2 dissapointing/worse signings which should be interesting because fans will see things for different reasons.

Not going to comment on the worst signings, not really into that type of thing tbf but Pryce and Gilmour were brilliant. Anderson made a pretty big impact in 2006 so would have to go with him.

I thought Kevin Ward had a big impact when he signed from Castleford with the overwhelming concensus that he was way past his best, but went on to prove people wrong. I am sure he went on to represent GB again after he signed for us.

I'm going to say Paul Anderson simply because he was finished at Bradford, I don't think he made the side in his last season, he joined us shed a bit of weight I seem to
remember and was outstanding for a couple of years.
Pryce and Gilmour was top players when they signed and probably did get better, Leon really surprised me I knew he could play anywhere in backs but I didn't expect him to be such a good stand off

I picked Baloo as well for that very fact that Bradford thought he was going downhill. He played over 60 games for us and I don't recall him having any bad games, all his carries seem to be 10 to 20 metres his impact was brilliant.

Odd list. I'd have voted Scully, he was a Wire first teamer on signing. Take it its just SL period but didn't we sign Foggy before? Know he blotted his copy book but Gleeson was a cracking player, so I've give him a vote.

The trio from Bradford all exceeded expectations at Saints, I think. Three great signings.

One person not on the list who deserves a mention is Fereti Tuilagi. Signed from Halifax as a bit of a project winger and ended up being a really destructive back rower for us.

As mentioned above, Fogerty's signing pre-dated SL (and I don't think he was really any good), and we didn't sign Iro from a SL club.

So no one thinks Paul Newlove was one of the top established players we signed?

If we’re not including Paul Newlove then it would be Bobbie Goulding for me

Goulding and Newy both signed pre-SL.

Although it occurs to me that Sean Long is not on the list

EDIT: On reflection, he wasn't really an established player when we signed him.

Can we include Sonny Nickle for the second time we signed him?

I could have swopped Adam Fogerty for Paul Atcheson or better still my forgotten Tuilagi, we would have had a more extensive list but we are only allowed a list of 10 players in the fans poll.

I was meaning more of the fact that we re-signed him.

I think SL era, there's only Nickle, Fozzard and Matty Smith we have let go and then brought back. Fozzard and Smith's second spells with us weren't the greatest on the pitch - no doubt their influence off pitch was worth them being around.

God, there were a lot pre-SL.

Since 96, our recruitment has improved markedly. Mostly... albeit with a small number of players who, let's be diplomatic, haven't met the required standards. Or been utter dicks.

For me Gilmour No 1. A great player we got rid of too early.
    Pryce an absolute game changer,
Baloo because he improved so much while he was here.

Not sure mufcsaint, it’s admin who set up the poll template, I not aware of any restriction options other than keeping voters names private.

I'd probably agree with those 3.

Atcheson is a good shout, did well for us and was unlucky with injury which ultimately ended up with Wellens taking his place.

I thought 'Patch' was a decent player, but he was pretty limited, and I remember a lot of fans never took to him.

Remember Millward putting Wellens to FB. He'd played halfback a few times as he emerged from the 'Academy' and I thought he was pretty 'distinctly average'. I don't think anyone had any great expectations and just hoped he was able to do a job there without disaster until Patch came back, but Wellens was an absolute revelation at FB, making an immediate impact. Funny how life can turn on one moment that you have no idea how pivotal it is until much later.

I'd go Leon Pryce. Improved with us and I'm surprised he doesn't seem to get in people's best Saints side, he edges Martyn and Hooper for me.

Not a chance he was better than Martyn. No way
