Still not sold on the idea of Coote and Austin being in there. They're about as British as I am Korean. At least Coote has played for Scotland previously, Austin has only played for Portugal bizarrely enough.

I think it's fair that Grace misses out. I like the kid and he gives us something that few in SL are capable of in open field, however his defence is still suspect (particularly in the air) and regularly gets folded over bringing the ball out from our own line. He simply isn't tier one international class at present.

Congrats to Knowles in particular though, hopefully the first of many international opportunities for him although might not make the final squad when the Burgii et al come in. Also pleased for Josh Jones. Doubt he'll make the final squad but he's been excellent this season and has really knuckled down to improve his game in recent years

Surprised Connor is in there, his form stinks. Will be lucky if O'Loughlin is fit enough to play. Not sure Handley and Ward deserve places either.

I think McGillvary and Ward are lucky to be in there. Not sure if I would have S O'L nowadays either.

Training squad or not, there are some laughable inclusions there. Trueman, Shaul, Handley, Ward and Lyne should be nowhere near any England or GB squad, all nowhere near good enough. Couple of others who have had poor seasons and are lucky to be there.

Ward is the selection gift that keeps giving.
Can’t believe Handley is in there but neither will make the full squad I suppose.

Great to see GB back. Looking at the squad list it's a bit underwhelming... but then again, there isn't much choice currently.

I expect us to put up decent opposition against the south sea island nations - but we're lacking in real star quality. The only ones that could be deemed that - including aussie based players - seem to be those coming towards the end of their careers.

If KW becomes our next coach then he could get to see some of our players up close and we get to see his approach too first match up

I expect Smithies to replace O Loughlin next year. Looks a very good player.

I wouldn't be surprised to see him in the England Knights squad when they tour later this year. He must stand a great chance for "rookie" of the year and maybe young player of the year, but I'm not 100% sure of the qualifying age for that one. Harry Newman should be in with a shout for that and probably Regan Grace if he qualifies.

Who would you have in there instead of these?

I'd have Shane Ward in from Corrie before Stevie Ward

Bear in mind this squad will be cut down to 25 and you’ve got the NRL based contingent to fit in as well. You’ve got 3 Burgesses, Hodgson, Widdop, Whitehead, Bateman, Graham and Hall to add into the equation. That makes a 38 player squad, cut 13 players from that and the dross is soon gone.

Training squads are always a bit random especially when a coach is 10000 miles away. For example, Handley is top of the try scoring charts therefore Bennett probably wants a closer look at him.
Forwards win games. The backs decide by how much.

    Dont be silly.

How are players like Knowles going to get the experience of playing in bigger, higher intensity games if they don't play in the international games?

Bring in some younger players (Smithies, Newman, Walker, etc) who actually have the potential to be good enough in the future, have a smaller squad or, at the very least, pick on form. If Jamie Shaul is in there then so should Niall Evalds (not good enough but better than Shaul), for example. The ones I’ve listed there are all miles away from being good enough for international level and always will be so it’s completely pointless them being there.

Has Ryan Hall actually been playing for the Roosters? I haven't really followed it closely this year.

Some funny inclusions in the squad, Stevie Ward, Handley, Lyne, Hughes, etc... and I have to agree I am not a fan of this Coote and Austin playing for GB, it's a farce.

The three you mentioned plus the likes of Welsby should be in the England Knights squad imo.
I've no problem with Handley, he's the top try scorer in what has ben a very poor season for Leeds.
Think! does he play on the same side of the field as Hurrell, if so that's a big help. Evalds has always been a very underrated player, again maybe should be in the Knights squad.

I know, I just don't like the fact they're not playing for the club. It also puts them in the shop window. At least we're back to a GB team now.

Those players should be in the England knights squad

Then one of the other two options. Either way there are 5 names in that squad who have done absolutely nothing to be there, whether they’ll be in the final squad or not. Another baffling one is no Mike Cooper, especially when Scott Taylor is there and he’s been in poor form for a while.

I'm not sure O'Loughlin, as good as he has been, should still be getting selected? He's barely fit these days.

Might be unfashionable but I think Matty Ashurst has been really unlucky to be uncapped in recent seasons.
