Is Widdop allowed to play in the Challenge cup or just league games ?

Sprained ankle initial diagnosis from the Dire estimate 3 to 4 weeks. Apparently they are looking at bringing in a half back, Matty Smith has been spoken at length.

Just when you thought the situation couldn't get any better for Warrington, they sign Matty Smith. Incredible.

Surely that's just a keep quiet payment to Catalans.

Strange if true. Unless Austin could potentially be out longer than they are admitting. They do look desperate though. Its a big ask for Patton to go it alone.

They could play Ratchford at Stand Off and move Mamo to full back.

Yes thats an option. Mamo at fullback would be a disaster for Warrington i reckon though. Tackles missed and bombs dropped all over the place.

He would say it but I believe Austin has said that he expects to miss one/two weeks and will be playing at Wembley.

For me though they need a scrum-half either way. It looks to me last few times I’ve watched them that they’re throwing more and more responsibility at Austin as the season goes on and essentially he’s now their main organiser/main field kicker now and they still want him to be their strike player in attack. When you put that much pressure and responsibility on a player I think there’s a point where the team breaks down.

I'd be amazed if he missed the game and only had a sprained ankle. A normal person would recover fully in 4-6 weeks, a full time professional given the best possible treatment including drugs, anti-inflamatories, hyperbaric chambers etc would make it far sooner. I think he'll play, but they'll do the will-he-won't-he thing all week in the build up.

Rumour is they are confident of getting either Matty Smith or Gareth Widdop by Friday's deadline. Not sure what use Smith would be as cover for Austin and not sure if he's played enough this year to actually be much of an improvement over Patton.

In fact, they are saying on rlfans that Smith has been signed on loan and will play Thursday and is training with them today. Not cup tied either.

He might not be cup-tied but surely there is a cut off point for signings . I always thought that it was before the semis .

The one for the league is this Friday, not sure about the cup. Can't imagine the RFL would have thought about such things.

The third change, and the one that will take effect first, is the signing deadline for the Coral Challenge Cup and the AB Sundecks 1895 Cup.

For both competitions, that deadline will be Friday July 19 – eight days before the Coral Challenge Cup semi finals, and nine before the AB Sundecks 1895 Cup semi finals.

Despite Smiths flaws i think a Smith-Austin combination could work better than a Patton-Austin combination.

Desperate times call for desperate measures?
Smith was for me the worst signing we have made in the past few years, called it before we signed him too. Not fussed if he plays in the final
