Feels like a combination of players having time off due to injury and rest, not coming back as sharp as a few weeks ago. (we all called for rotation though so as fans we have to accept that a side effect of rotation can be a lack of consistency.)

The halves are interesting, Lomax has a lot of credit in the bank with some super games.

Richardson has found form and fages also has credit but has a similar skill set to Lomax so could be feeling a bit under pressure to perform, unlike when Richardson was out of the picture due to injury at the start of the season.

A win is a win but other teams will see a chink in our armour, similar to 12 months ago.

Thought it was the worst game of the season - I hope we never have to play at that time again. The whole thing seemed wrong. Atmosphere so flat. Credit should be given to the way Huddersfield played against us. They defended superbly and did their homework by nullifying Lomax and Coote. You can always tell when our pack has not dominated because Roby has a quiet game. We were very careless at times with our handling. Hope we’ve got this out of our system.

Lomax’s worst game for a long time and Coote very scratchy too. Looked like we’d not trained all week
Lomax took a head knock early on, maybe he should have gone off for HIA. He looked dazed the rest of the match.

Re drop goal, Coote did try a snatched attempt but it barely got off the ground.

That game does bring back the thorny issue of a specialist goal kicker. We missed s couple of conversions which would have opened up a two score gap and may have knocked the stuffing out of Huddersfield.
Similarly a specialist drop goal kicker could have put the game out of reach.

As someone mentioned earlier, maybe Lomax and Fages are too similar or maybe the problem was that they hadn't played together for 4 or 5 weeks.

Not me, and precisely for that reason.

Fages had a bad game but kept ending up with the ball on the last tackle. Whether Fages kept calling for it or Lomax/Coote weren't putting themselves in the right position I don't know but it was poor game management. We looked frantic most of the game today, with a few calmer heads and better last tackle options we'd have been 3 to 4 scores clear easily.
Forwards win games. The backs decide by how much.

Well that was awful tonight. I’m pleased we won obviously but it was scrappy, frustrating and far more nerve wracking than it needed to be. Our game management was appalling, our decision making poor and we went away from everything we’ve been doing. Us being in the next round is literally the only positive from that.

Terrible performance, Coote and Lomax both poor and a few others below par. I thought Fages was terrible as well, what he was thinking throwing the ball inside to Amor after the Makinson break. Anyone who thinks he should be scrum half long term is deluded. Yet another knockout game in which we’ve played poorly, can’t remember the last time we played well in one apart from Cas last season. Thankfully Huddersfield are rubbish.

Interesting that the Sky commentary team thought Coote had a stormer. He was ok today, halves were more of a problem.

Pretty poor games from our 1,6,7 and 9. Playing poorly in the cup is criminal and a 6 point margin is too risky. A bad ref call or a bounce of the ball can burn you in a close game. Need to be better. Maybe im not giving Huddersfield enough credit. I suppose our lads are entitled to the odd poor game. I just wish they wouldn’t save their worst rugby for the knockout games

Admit Theo had an off-day but still prefer to Danny . Also I would have definitely gone for Tommy Mak. instead of Costello . Paulo so far has been a huge disappointment . Hope Thommo . Percy & LMS are fit & raring to go for the next round against Wakey .

TBH I thought Paulo had a good game when he came on and added a bit of direction that was missing. From the game yesterday we still seem to be lacking in game management when it is needed.

Eh! We won a tough, tense game away against a team with nothing else to play for in terms of some silver. We played a scrappy match and toughed it out. I thought it was a mentally strong performance that the team could not have done last year. Hudds actually played above themselves too in my view

I was just going to say the same thing, listening to the game it sounded as though both our half backs were having an off game in wrong decisions, passing to the floor. When Paulo came on he seemed to add like you say a bit more direction. What was wrong with our half backs was it just poor form or were they a bit nervy because of it being a cup game.

Pre game it was always going to be more of a tricky game, according to the Hudd fans their team defended very well but didn't make enough metres in attack, at the end of the day it was a win and we might settle down for the next game against Wakey.

    We won - happy days.

For what it's worth, I thought Grace had a stormer. Looked a real confident player and showed some class putting the kick in for Fages TRY.

I agree with the point on Paulo and I think there may even begin to be a case for him starting the big games

Thought we settled once Paulo came on. A worry that we do look like we lose composure in cup games. Lot's of mistakes again trying to score off every play. Chill lads and just play.

So, the mental block in knockout games continues. It was a painful experience. Sloppy passing throughout, and nobody appearing to take organisational control. There didn’t seem to be many hard, telling tackles going in which could have given Huddersfield something to think about. I thought our discipline could have been better, too. Paulo gave away three penalties in quick succession which, in games like these, can be decisive. We will need a very different performance against Wakefield if we want to progress to the semis.

Hudds played well credit to them. Our halves I don’t know what happened. Theo looked lost and his decision making was terrible and Lomax wasn’t much better. We seem to alter the way we play in knock out games like against Cats and wire last year instead of just doing what we do in the league.

Champion teams find ways to win when they play poorly.

We did that in a place where we've come unstuck a few times before - just happy we're through to the next round.
"The great fallacy is that the game is first and last about winning. It is nothing of the kind. The game is about glory, it is about doing things in style and with a flourish, about going out and beating the other lot, not waiting for them to die of boredom." Danny Blanchflower.

It looked like we had all the territory from hard work with the forwards and the only time Huddersfield got near our line was from our penalties or mistakes. The positive from that is our forwards were playing well. The ruck seemed really slow making it hard to break their defence but our pivots had a bad day at the office as well. We looked like we were trying to post points from the kick off which is good but you need to start the game well, settle in and build some pressure, instead we looked desperate to score and sometimes panic can set in when you don't. I was impressed with the Huddersfield tries in front of our sticks they were really well worked. To be fair they took their chances really well.

We've got to be a lot smarter in these knock out games, I thought we were really dumb at times. We were good enough to play badly and win but that won't last we need to turn up and play well. Maybe the feel of the occasion had an impact, I'm not sure. The whole day just felt flat, I don't think we would have played like that against Wigan or wire. Walking to the ground was like a ghost town and I had a bad feeling on the way, we always play badly when things feel flat like that. It felt like a friendly sat in the stands. If we want to win things we can't have that attitude.

The Wembley song gets on my tits, can we sing it if we win the semi not when we're 2 points up playing badly in a game that can go either way. It's our version of it's always your year.

    Tough cup tie. Different mindset.
We found a way to fight through.
Its the type of game we would have lost a year ago.
