Default Redvee Team of the Decade: Stand Off

The stand off position is next up for debate which requires one vote from the five options I've selected for you.

It's not the strongest of areas in the voting as we have recruited fairly badly at times in this area over the last decade.

If you could please consider their performances over the last decade and not performances prior to 2010.

    The five options are:

    Leon Pryce 2010-2012 (2 seasons)
    Lee Gaskell 2011-2013 (2 seasons)
    Lance Hohaia 2012-2015 (4 seasons)
    Travis Burns 2015-2017 (2 seasons)
    Jonny Lomax 2010 - current (10 seasons)

The poll is open for 7 days.

For me it has to be Lomax. The only other one of note is Pryce.

Got to go Lomax. Pryce was past his best post 2008

Lomax might have spent a fair bit of time at full back, scrum half and even on the wing early on but he’s head and shoulders above all other stand offs in this decade. We weren’t seeing anywhere near the best of Pryce towards the end and the others are barely worth commenting on.

Lomax all day, last 2 years he has been the best half in the league, and should have been the Man of Steel in 2019, he was the best player in the league.

Agree with the comments, just 1 stand out stand off, JLO.

Easier. Jonny Lomax for the incredible contribution he has made to the team. I believed in him through all the injury related adversity. He has an incredible rugby brain, a lot of skill and is a brave so and so.

Lomax without question, I’d say. I seem to remember that Pryce was injured for a big chunk of his last couple of seasons.

I’m looking forward to the hookers one. Gonna be so tough to separate Robes and Tommy Lee

If it had been Pryce in his prime and Lomax - perhaps I'd vote for Pryce in the standoff position, but Lomax has been a great player for us in a few positions and made standout appearances at standoff more recently - maybe in some of his best form of all.

Given the amount of time Lomax has been at Saints, playing numerous positions and suffering bad injuries - it's been remarkable his comeback over the last couple of seasons. Especially the attitude shown in getting to these highs after Holbrook moved him to standoff when Barba arrived - and how he's managed himself and got playing to such a standard.

Yes, Lomax the clear choice here.

For these reasons it's Lomax without a doubt. Thought he really stepped up this year and took the line on.

I'm not sure I agree with that though. I thought Hastings was worthy winner of MOS this year. And Lomax didn't make the dream team at stand off did he? That was Blake Austin.

The Travis Burns signing to play alongside Walsh in the halves was symptomatic of the poor recruitment decisions at St Helens during this time. Whereas Leon Pryce in the era before, was a brilliant signing for Saints.

I can completely understand why Hastings got Man of Steel, I can accept him getting it, for me Lomax was better though, that even came out of Hastings mouth, he singled out Lomax, no one else. Lomax may not have made the dream team, he wasnt as flashy as Austin, but was a hell of a lot more consistent than him, i think the only bad game he had was at Wembley, where pretty much all of our team did. For Lomax to not even get a mention in the Man of Steel shortlist is an insult to how good he was this season.

I can accept Hastings as Man of Steel but the fact that Austin was in the dream team ahead of Lomax was a joke.

Anyone else finding these threads a bit depressing? We've had some rubbish players over the past 10 years.

We,ve never had a specialised stand off since Tommy Martyn, we took quite a few gambles Leon Pyrce was a centre turned into a no 6 Lance Hohaia was a full back turned into a 6, Jonny Lomax was a full back turned into a 6, Lee Gaskell was a scrum half turned into a 6, Travis Burns was a stand off and turned into a 6 with no pivotal role and was a lot less ineffective was better when he played for Hull KR.

Completely agree, though Hastings had a decent season, him being in the dream team shows the flaws in the voting system.

You are right, but it's a cracking thread.

Any chance we could do one for other decades after this? I'd love to see an 80's and 90's one as we had some brilliant players pre superleague that get a bit forgotten.

How about a Super League team of the decade? There's a couple been put together for the NRL I've seen- https://www.nrl.com/news/2019/08/19/...010s-greatest/

A little. In hindsight, we were always hopeful going into bigger games but in reality, we didn't have good enough players.

I do think 2014 was a very good season in reflection of all this & nathan brown (and cunningham as assistant) did a tremendous job getting us over the line that season with the injuries

    This all day long.

Austin been inconsistent throughout the season - and every time he played against us, he was totally outplayed by Lomax (helped by Knowles having Austin in his pocket)

In that run-in to the end of the regular season, it was like nobody wanted to finish top. All the teams in contention kept tripping up. Just slipped up marginally less than the others.

I wasn't knocking the thread, that's a great idea. Just the fact we've had some very iffy players, thankfully not at the same time.

A 90's one would be good, I only started watching in 87 so I might struggle with that decade.
