    a) it goes off ticket sales and not actual gate attendance
    b) if the original ticket figure is poor, they'll add a couple hundred on.

    All lies unfortunately.
Are you saying that people buy a ticket and don't go, or that Saints declare additional income and pay tax on ficticios figures?

So how come we only had a reported crowd of approximately 5,500 when we played Salford in the snow in March 2013 even though Saints had sold many more season tickets that year?

So not quite twice as large, and their figure includes Leigh in that.
The figures you are quoting are for MBC not the towns themselves. In terms of 'town' population St Helens is twice the size of Wigan and always has been. As you point out the 322,000 includes Leigh and also, Astley and Tyldesley. None of these places would relish being called Wigoon.

The first year of the 5 year deal was at Widnes in 2011 so expired 2015 season.

I don't recall many good memories of our 2011 season at Widnes, didn't realise the 5 year deal was from then.

Considering we effectively played the whole season "away" we were unlucky not to go all the way. Had we won the final that would have been unprecedented.
