Default Saints v Wigan to open the season?

League express reporting Saints v Wigan will kick off next season on Thursday 31st January. Apparently the RFL are looking to have a number high impact games and derbies to kick off the season.

Good idea! Return on GF and spreads out any other derby matches that might occur due to Magic, Cup and play offs. Would also like to see derbies on Easter Monday with Wigan/Saints playing Wire/Salford (or Leigh/Widnes if they were in SL).

It’s not a terrible idea really. One game in Jan, one at Easter in April and probably a loop game at the back end of the year spaces them out a bit. I just hope we don’t have to play them at Magic too, as that will be too much.

31st January for a season opener is terrible though.

Thursday 31st January, is this Summer Rugby? if correct the earliest start date since we changed over to summer rugby, talk now if Magic Weekend moves, then the Challenge Cup semi finals could got to Newcastle instead?

It does seem very early. Players on international duty will get hardly a break, and also very little time to play any meaningful friendlies.

In the last four non Good Friday v Wigan games at Saints attendances have been, 14,061, 13,138, 16,692 and 14,202.

I think first game up in 2019 will beat those, and probably sell out.

Perhaps the traditionalists are trying to get the season start back to August bit by bit, after all January is summer in the Anti podes
On the Back foot looking for the front one.

But possibly at the expense of Good Friday?

Sounds like something a Mr E. Hearn would think of to me...
I'd be on board with it for sure - enjoyed it when we played Leeds at home in the first game a few years back

Wouldn't sell out on a Thursday

My understanding is Good Friday will still be Wigan v Saints.

Yes I thought that - I was just thinking that an opening fixture sell out derby v Wigan would possibly impact on the size of the Good Friday attendance which is also always a sell out. Overkill and all that.

With global warming should start the season on Boxing Day and bring the GF forward a month

Imagine the boost to clubs coffers from Boxing Day and New Year derbies to kick off the season - would be sell outs everywhere.

We might occasionally lose games to the weather but based on recent years not too many as the weather is just as bad in February
