League express reporting Saints v Wigan will kick off next season on Thursday 31st January. Apparently the RFL are looking to have a number high impact games and derbies to kick off the season.

It’s not a terrible idea really. One game in Jan, one at Easter in April and probably a loop game at the back end of the year spaces them out a bit. I just hope we don’t have to play them at Magic too, as that will be too much.
31st January for a season opener is terrible though.
St Helens Rugby League Football Club
Magic will be Cas won't it
Thursday 31st January, is this Summer Rugby? if correct the earliest start date since we changed over to summer rugby, talk now if Magic Weekend moves, then the Challenge Cup semi finals could got to Newcastle instead?
In the last four non Good Friday v Wigan games at Saints attendances have been, 14,061, 13,138, 16,692 and 14,202.
I think first game up in 2019 will beat those, and probably sell out.
With global warming should start the season on Boxing Day and bring the GF forward a month
Imagine the boost to clubs coffers from Boxing Day and New Year derbies to kick off the season - would be sell outs everywhere.
We might occasionally lose games to the weather but based on recent years not too many as the weather is just as bad in February
