Whether the likes of Thompson or Makinson get to win their first caps on Saturday, the experience of going to the States and being part of the England camp can only retain their interest in the game and spur their ambitions to improve and represent their country.
I think if it achieves a 20,000 plus crowd, it will have been worthwhile.

On the subject of our players, I think Thompson should be nailed on to play. If Hall and McGilvery are fully fit, TM may not be selected. However, he has had one hell of a season. He takes a lot of pressure off the forwards in successfully returning the ball and, with good service, is one hell of a finisher. With McGilvery recently back from injury, he may just get his chance.

from a selfish perspective, the fewer Saints players that are selected the better.Reduce the risk of getting injuries.

There's a little promo video on Twitter emphasizing the physical side of the game but with no helmets and no pads so let's hope the players play it tough but fair.

I don't know if Jake Connor will play but if he does I hope the coach will tell him to control his mouth. Some of the NZ forwards may not appreciate his "sense of humour"
Lets hope he doesn't and someone gives him a smack, the yanks will love all that.

I thought it was a good article and Sinfield comes across OK. Thanks for posting.

They have a far greater chance of getting hurt in a car crash on the way to training than being injured playing the game but you can’t mothball people and stop them doing things that they wish to do. I doubt there are any players who would rather ensure their availability for the next club game by not turning out in Denver; just look at Roby, for example, who has frequently expressed his desire to continue his international career despite having already gained numerous caps and approaching the latter stages of his playing career.

Luke Thompson has missed out on the 17. I'm lost for words.

I can only assume he has a knocl. Otherwise Scott Taylor has been picked before him and he wasn't even in the original squad, plus he will 3 wingers in the 17. Shocking.

Shocker. Can only presume he's picked up a knock but seen as Bennett has previously left out Walmsley and Percival who knows.

I've got a feeling he's going to play Makinson at centre.

It looks that way. Makinson and Percival centre with Connor on the bench and Bateman in the pack. Bennett is making me lose all interest in England at the minute with some of his decisions.

Could we see a record 60m field goal in this one?

I must admit for some reason I've had a feeling ever since the 19 man squad was announced that Makinson would play centre.
    Maybe it's because of the way the Aussies select their backline. Looking like;

    1. Ratchford
    2. McGilvray
    3. Makinson
    4. Percival
    5. Hall
    6. Lomax
    7. Widdop
    8. Hill
    9. Roby
    10. Graham
    11. S. Burgess
    12. Whitehead
    13. O'Loughlin

Bench: T. Burgess, Taylor, Bateman, Connor

Its something Ive noticed in Australia teams and State of Origin teams they often play players out of their club positions.

For me it just shows how stupid it is having a bloke picking the team from the other side of the world. I said when he was appointed I massively disagreed with it anf he's done nothing yet to make me change my mind.

Two of his advisors/assistants are from Saints though.
With him being young they may have taken Thompson for the experience.

Massive shame that there’s any Saints players in the squad tbh.

You're completely ignoring the fact he has been the best prop in Super League this season though. He's also only 6 months younger than Jake Connor who is playing so I don't buy that argument at all.

Nice to see the red vee making up more than a third of the squad ; )

Shame Thompson wasn't selected - though has stiff competition in the props with Graham, Hill and the Burgess boys. Thought he might get in ahead of Scott Taylor. Pretty sure Thompson is going to be one for the future of the team though.

Made up for Makinson. He's been a quality player for many years and this is good reward for getting back to his best and putting in consistent effort over the last couple of seasons.

It’s tough on Thompson but there are some good props there, Tom Burgess always looks a bit error prone whenever I’ve seen him at International level though I have to say. I’m suprised with Makinson at centre, if it’s not going to be Bateman I thought either Connor or Ratchford would fill in there. Williams pulling out changes the order a bit but I thought he might have gone with Connor centre with three front rowers on the bench. If Connor comes off the bench where does he play?

    It’s a decent 17 though.

How dare he when I’d only just posted that Thompson was nailed on to play! I’m sorry Luke. I take all responsibility for daring to make predictions .

Unless Thompson has had a knock, that’s one bizarre decision.

I’ve never really seen what all the fuss is about with Scott Taylor. Looks like he’s a big character in the squad but never really seen games where he’s the best prop on the pitch consistently. Thomson is the best front rower in the league at the moment and is producing higher numbers than Taylor in the key areas for a front rower .. more carries, making more meters, busting more tackles and getting away more offloads than Taylor. Poor decision not picking him IMO.
