If the try line was the touch line Makinson would be a world beater.
I'm not saying he's a bad player but there are far better wingers about.

Not in this country. Makinson is a top player

He's a good player yes, but Charnley and Tom Davies are better wingers. Makinson has the advantage though in that he can play in more than one position.

To be fair you are normally as objective as much as one can expect given your loyalties but I can only assume you have been drinking today

I have been impressed with Charnley since he has çome back. He has hit his stride immediately upon return and probably will be in contention over the next few series if he keeps playing as he is. Makinson lacks size for me and international wingers need to make yards on exit sets. Makinson may struggle in this regard I think. Generally speaking this is Charnleys main advantage over Makinson. Overall Makinson is a smarter player, better defensively and as quick and as good a finisher as Charnley.

On Davies the jury is still out but he isn't as good as either Charnley or Makinson yet. Its probably too early. Has he been called up for the Knights?

I agree , Makinson is a terrific player , his one downfall for me he runs sideways too much .

    I'd go with..

    1Lomax/Widdop
    2.McGillvary
    3.Bateman
    4.Percival
    5.Hall
    6.Widdop/Lomax
    7.Richardson/Williams
    8.T Burgess
    9.Roby
    10.Graham
    11.Whitehead
    12.S Burgess
    13.O'Loughlin

    14.Hill
    15.G Burgess
    16.Ward
    17.Clarke

Williams has been crap all year but I think that's down to him having to play with Sam Powell every week. If he was paired with Widdop I think you'd get a lot more out of him.
Not sure Bennett would throw Richardson into the mix for his debut in this game but who else is there to play 7?
I'd put Stevie Ward in as well on the bench to cover back row.

On form, there isn’t a better winger in Super League this season than Tommy Makinson. Whilst others may have scored more tries, his all round game is faultless. Despite lacking size he is a very strong player who makes great metres with ball in hand and his defence is top notch. He’s proven he can finish too and for me is a complete all round winger & fully deserves his chance in an England shirt.

Charnley takes raps for doing what Charnley does best - boasting a great try to game ratio after racking up 3 and 4 tries in a game against poor opposition when in reality his main quality is speed (and credit where it’s due you have to be in the right place at the right time to finish). That said, he isn’t anywhere near Makinson as an all round player which is why Tommy will go and he won’t.

As for Davies being better...I know your Wigan bias can often cloud any common sense you may have but come on pal give it a rest. Or if you actually do believe that statement let me know what you drink and/)or what drugs you are on and I’ll have to try some

    Agreed. Also:
    - Sam Tomkins is also a better full back than Barba.
    - Joel wasn't at fault for the bar incident.
    - Ben Flower is misunderstood.
    - Martin Dermott was the best hooker in the history of British RL.
    - Jamie Lyon was overated and Paul Koloi was better.
    - Ellgren tracksuits were the height of fashion.

I should also have included Tom Johnstone to my better than list as a winger.

Tom Johnstone who has been dropped several times this year bun wakefield for poor performance? Glad I don’t share your perspective on the best rugby players or I’d have spent this season believeing Barba is a waste of space and longing for the days of Ricky Bibey and Leon Felton

Good winger when on form, but thats the problem a bit too inconsistent. Another problem is his defence.

For Makinson if you ar just looking at attack and scoring tries then Makinson is way down the pecking order, for internationals Bennet looks for defence first and attack secondary, thats why Percival didnt get a gig.
Hall and McGillvary are way ahead of anybody for an all round game. Charnley and Makinson probably after that.

I sincerely hope no Saints players get picked.

Appreciate that the players themselves will want to be involved internationally and gain representative honours, and also that in reality we're going to have some of our players turning out, but a bad injury to one of our key players at this stage in the season would be hair-tearingly annoying, especially if done in some pointless international friendly.

Agree with all that bar McGilvary, who is a great player but hasn't been doing it this season. Has he been injured?

Oh, and regardless of playing ability merit, if there is any player with a more punchable face than Josh Charnley, I've yet to see it.

He missed most of April and May with injury and is just about back to normal in a poor Giants team, he is one of those players that ups ther.e game when he wears an England shirt. Not sure if Makinson can do that but he needs to be given the opportunity to prove that he can.

TBH he wins the Sean Day award for walk in's. Don't believe the hype.
