    Default Increased Drug Use

Gareth Carvell, now the head of the Rugby League Players’ Association has claimed that his sport does not have a problem with drugs and said that the recent spate of failed tests are more indicative of society as a whole, not the game.

Probably a bit more indicative of the social scene in OZ with the NRL perhaps the UK are gradually catching up. The biggest difference here in the UK is that they are being caught during the season and not outside it.

Go back 20 years and cocaine was a drug snorted through a fifty pounds note after being cut up with a gold credit card. Nowadays the availability is sadly more common.

As said has been a massive increase in use of cocaine in everyday life however these players know they are subject to testing and are fully accountable for their actions. This includes Minns. I think it is a disgrace he has used his mothers death as an excuse. There have been many people subject to far worse bereavements but did not resort to recreational drugs. He should be subject to the same punishment as all the other players. The length of punishments may need to be reviewed in the light of how it compares to other types of drug as a means of enhancing performance.

It's just a question of calories. If you've got a six-pack you're not going to drink 20 pints of lager to get off your head when cocaine does the job and you can stay fit too

The reason it's become a bigger "problem" in society is due to the fact that the younger generation have a very vacuous streak where looking good on social media is vital to their self-worth. They still want to have a good time but without the weight gain

Working in an office with a lot of young people it seems strange but they don't see anything that is socially unacceptable in taking cocaine. Some of them have even taken it in their lunch hour like I used to have a pint in the 90s when I first started working in an office

What's that got to do with Cas? Minns plays for Hull KR and Hardaker has been sacked and is nothing to do with Cas anymore

I think Carvell is right to a degree - that drug use is more commonplace generally than it once was. I don't think it's any more of an issue in Rugby League than other sports/or in society but doesn't mean we should ignore/trivialise it. Something has to be done to detract from it otherwise it will continue and get worse still. Some sports reputation is in a bad way given the drug use situation - I'd hate for RL to go the same way.

We are fortunate that we got Barba as a result drug indiscretions and he seems to be going well and living clean. Some players seem more prone than others and harsh enough punishments need to be an option otherwise there won't be enough deterrent. Will be interesting to see how the current investigations go and how they are dealt with.

Cas need to have a good long look at what their players are doing in their free time

Story from Cas has nothing to do with Eden, or anybody failing a drugs test

This has been put out today by Cas regarding Garry Lo. Too early to speculate as to what this issue with the police is all about?
