    Default Photography & Cameras

I have a holiday to South America planned for later this year and just looking at investing in a new camera in order to capture some of the amazing landscapes and cities etc. and just looking for a bit of advice on what kind of camera to go for?

My iPhone does the job for the odd quick snap and upload to FB or Instagram, but thinking I'd like to be able to print off some of the pics I take and keep them as memories so want them to be of decent quality (assuming I can take a good pic mind ), so thinking an actual camera should do that job nicely - but I just don't know what to go for....

    So, any recommendations?

I like the Sony RX-100 series. It's a small, really small point and shoot camera. It's small to the point of discreet. Fits in the pocket and easy to use. There's no point carrying a massive DSLR around that has a million settings if you're not going to utilize them.

Anyway, the RX-100 has a really good sensor for shooting HQ pics considering its size. I would also invest in some Smart Media cards and shoot in .RAW for the best quality.

What about in low-light, and not requiring a tripod to let the light in to get good quality pics?

It all depends on the size of the sensor and the ISO capabilities of the camera.

If you were to choose a DSLR camera the best budget one to get is the Nikon D3300. There is a newer D3400 model but its overpriced and other than it having WIFI it is no better than the earlier model nor does it have a cleaning facility programme built in on the sensor. There are many excellent smaller compact cameras around. Panasonic's Lumix range of cameras is very good in my opinion including the cheaper modles. Many of them have in built filters which adds huge creativity to your photography.

A short list I would have a look at these, excellent image quality:-

    Panasonic LX100
    Canon G7x mk2
    Sony RX100 mk4

All 3 are zoom lenses and better suited to travel photography.

Wasn't really looking at spending that much tbh, and all 3 are more expensive than the DSLR mentioned in the post above yours albeit they are smaller and probably suited a bit more to travel photography and taking quick shots.

Might be a good idea to find a specialist camera shop (Liverpool and Manchester have a couple to choose from) and discuss with them the options - they will be able to suggest the type of camera best suited to your budget and types of shot that you are hoping to take while you can get a feel for the options and the complexities of different machines. I sought such advice many years ago when I was going to Sri Lanka and received excellent guidance - I always remember the comment "it's funny how people are willing to spend £000s on a holiday but aren't prepared to spend a decent amount on a camera only to return disappointed when the photographs don't reflect the memories". For what it's worth I chose a Canon SLR with a couple of lenses but there are much better compacts now available as alternatives.

Yeah might have to do that, just thought there may be some budding amateur photographers on here that might be able to give a good steer (and help me make it look like I know what I'm talking about when I do go and speak to a specialist)

Sony DSC WX100 or a Panasonic DMC LX7 (Leica Lens) for a budget around £300.

Personally, I wouldn't even think of a DSLR if you are travelling. I would go for a less bulky Bridge Camera.
