    Default Rule changes

The RFL have finally done something about catching the ball with one foot behind the line.

This is being discussed on the scrum or no scrum thread..
Humans are more concerned with having than being.

Good news about the kick rule, also a change at scrums hopefully to boost a bit more running play.

Similarly an extra tackle from a 20m tap may stop people kicking it dead

There cannot be another game that changes the basic rules of the game so frequently yet still cannot seem to get it right OR have consistency wherever the game is played! Year in year out the rules change.

When I started playing / watching just off the top of my head:

    Scrums were contested
It was attacking head / defending ball
The feed was at least supposed to be down the middle not straight into the second row
    We had 2 substitutes
It was 3 points for a try
You could play the ball to yourself
You could strike at the play the ball
You could take a 25 tap as quick as you could get there
You could tackle above the chest without it being a high shot -
You definitely had to play the ball with your foot
You really had to ground the ball properly for it to be considered a try
No such thing as a turnover
Warrington hadn't won the league for decades ( oops no change there)
The referees generally didn't coach the players on field - if you transgressed rules you got pinged. They generally managed with just 2 touch judges no video or in goal helpers.
There was no sin bin, head bin , head tests....(just head cases!)
It was up to the ball carrier to keep hold of the pill
No zero tackle. You got 6 that was yer lot
Defenders could actually tackle opponents into touch without conceding a penalty
The obstruction rule was pretty clear and we could use dummy runners. Everyone understood the rule
Following a good all -in brawl an all round bo11ocking from the referee was generally sufficient without waving cards everywhere
If you hit the corner flag you were out of play

2 substitutes. You were lucky, when I played if you broke your ankle they put you on the wing for nuisance value.

Add to that list playing the ball where you were actually tackled

They changed the ruling on how to feed the scrum as well because of Alex Murphy.

They changed the whole rule about what happened after a penalty kick to touch because of him.

IIRC The 4 tackles was introduced after we had a large dominant pack, then when we changed our style and became a fast dominant pack they changed it to 6 tackles. I'm not a conspiracy theorist, I just think the RFL are out to get us.

I think that was changed around 1973? Just before my time it was 6 tackles when I started. Prior to 4 it was of course unlimited- now that would suit "the grind"!

Not certain, but I think the 4 tackles came in after our 66 season and the 6 after the 71 season. That's only a rough idea so may not be correct.

I know we've had this debate before and completely get the potential problems with the weather but I will always miss the Boxing Day/New Year games and wish the season started on Boxing Day with the GF played a month earlier.
I know it would never happen in all honesty and lots wouldn't want it but I can dream...
