Default Saints hard men from union.

As a club we have in the past had lots of signings from union. That avenue is no closed but the closed season boredom has made me think of the three hardest not best from that source.

    Mine are.

    1. Mantle

    2. Gibbs

    3. Evans.

Our club has a rich history of bringing in Union players.

It's a shame we won't see that again, although I can't believe we don't Scout in places like Samoa

How do you define a 'hard man' ?
Kevin Ward or Jim Mills for example ?
Then you have the so called 'hard men' who in truth are cowardly & sly ,such as Ryan Bailley or Paul Davidson.
In recent times I would say Chris Joynt & James Graham are true 'hard men' ,gave their all on the field for 80 minutes ,never took a a backward step & played the game as gentlemen.

Many players reckon that Chris Seldon was the hardest/toughest

    In no particular order
"The great fallacy is that the game is first and last about winning. It is nothing of the kind. The game is about glory, it is about doing things in style and with a flourish, about going out and beating the other lot, not waiting for them to die of boredom." Danny Blanchflower.

    Quite!

Are we talking about the same James Graham who served a 12 match ban for biting Billy Slater's ear? Great player but 'gentleman' is up for discussion.

Didn't he have a finger that was giving him some grief, so he had it chopped off and after a few weeks carried on playing.

Did you ever really believe that? I genuinely didn't. He simply isn't that kind of player, and Slater is the Aussie version of Tomkins, a penalty milking cry baby. I never felt the video evidence was remotely convincing.

He was missing half a finger when he coached me back in 1986. Don't know the story of how he lost it,but it wouldn't surprise me if he was playing again not long after.

Yes, He kept dislocating the finger so had it amputated. He missed match while he had it done. John is really struggling now with his knee's.

James Graham is a great player but he'd be eaten alive by some of the players mentioned.

    It's a debate we've had many times.
Would these player cope with the modern games players with their training, diets, full time status, etc?...Or would they excel if given the same?
Sadly, we'll never know the answer.

Thanks for the little trip down memory lane folks!
