Me too. Familiarity breeds contempt. Ive seen Saints win everything in my time but never had much to cheer on the international front. Plus its quietly satisfying cheering for players you hate at club level. The sport really needs a bigger status internationally. Come on England!!!!

Lucky fella!! Did they win?? And in your opinion when and why did things swing the Australians way????? They've had the upper hand on us for a while now.

I remember the Australia game being absolutely freezing too!

You're right about the noise, and still stands out as a game I was gutted to lose and being wound up on the day
    England/NZ was 1pm. Aus/Fiji 3.30pm. I'd argue the 2nd game was a better TV slot.

Reckon Aussies got ahead 1966 ish, full tours, we were still in there giving a good account of ourselves, club sides could still beat their second string in the mid week games, weekend games went to the top clubs against their first string, last game I recall was a Tuesday night game, packed KR, Ashton turned an A team out.

Losing that semi in 2013 was gutting we were seconds away from a World Cup final 75,000 sell out at Old Trafford, that place would have bounced that night.

I remember emotions being high on redvee that day. I was gutted at full time. If only Ben Westwood managed to ground the ball over the line. If only George Burgess didn't give away that late penalty. If only Ryan Hall didn't bomb that intercept.

Apologies, I seemed to think the Fiji game was a lot colder because it were later.

I suppose that'd clash with the Full Time in the football, don't think the Fiji game was on the beeb

In many ways lets hope not. Id imagine it would be poorly attended such is the struggle of RL to create strong demand for international competition in comparison with other sports and the casual sports fan would not be able to discern that it was a warm up match.

The last two internationals played in Avignon (against England and NZ) have had 17k crowds... the England game in 2011 was a friendly as well.

That sounds about right, Saints were beating the NZ/OZ touring sides up to about 1965 and still making a fist of it for a couple of seasons after. In 1961 the saints team had a lot of young players with Sullivan,Karalius and Huddart the senior influential players. The young set were:-

    Frank Barrow (18)
    Ken Large (22)
    Alex Murphy (22)
    Ray French (21)
    Brian McGinn (21)
    Keith Northey (21)
    Cliff Watson (21)

Sam Burgess named England captain. Thought it would have gone to Jammer but I suppose Burgess will play more minutes.

I hope this Sam's reign is longer than the other guy. Great player, hard as nails.

Martin Sadler in RL Express was saying that there probably wasn't much difference between the two from a captaincy viewpoint but that selection of Burgess was probably the preferred option because he'd be on the field for longer. He also thought that would provide a good PR springboard for RL given the greater public/press awareness of who Burgess is.

Both will be leaders in the England camp anyway and it's not like Jammer will hold back his opinions during matches/team talks either.
