As I have said on twitter, it isn't even a shock result today. Years of under investment masked by the genius of Fergie.

We are £200m worth of players short of being up there with City and Chelsea again. As someone pointed out, had Moyes started with Young and Lingard and left Kagawa and Januzaj on the bench there would have been hell to pay. Yes Young played well pre season but that's all it was- pre season. He is not a LB and was at fault for the second goal.

Anyone can see how sub standard we are in defence and midfield. We have lost 3 leaders and experienced defenders and signed one young LB- admittedly one with great potential.

So here we are now with 2 weeks to go and there will now no doubt be some panic buys. Clubs will double their asking price knowing how desperate we are. We seemingly haven't learnt from last years transfer window fiasco. Players should have been bought early.

We won't even finish top 4 and then I wonder where the blame will start.

    Default New season thread 2014/5

New season and United carry on where they left off ! Think United fans can now start to worry as I don't see big names wanting to come on board with no CL?

Just hope my lot can get a decent start.

Just about coping, found it really hard watching United serve up garbage football whilst Fergie was still there in the last few years, despite us still winning things

Last season was soul destroying though! Terrible football with terrible results

I cant believe how few chances you created, I only remember Fabianski making one save and that was off a Phil Jones cross. Luke Shaw will help with some natural width, but you are trying to play football from the back and the players aren't capable. Fletcher's distribution is woeful as well. It's a much tougher job than I thought it was although when RVP is back he is capable of scoring out of nothing

Have pinched this from another forum but this sums up exactly how I feel. This poster nails it.

"Only one game gone so I probably shouldn't be panicking yet though a large bit of me certainly is. I've stated many times on here, van Gaal is the perfect man for this job after what he did at Barcelona and Bayern, laying the foundations of what came after for them. I've no doubt he'll do the same here but it's probably dawned on me today just what a rebuilding job this is.

I understand we had a vast number of injuries today, but how the squad has got to this state, I don't know. 'Not balanced' is the kind assessment of it. There are a number of players who I dearly hope leave the club in the next couple of weeks and I include in that ones who've done very good jobs for the club on the whole, so I feel bad about saying that about the likes of Hernandez. But it's become difficult to now see a way back for the likes of him, Nani etc and I hope the names who've been mentioned as being able to go recently all get moved on before the end of the window. Anderson, Fellaini, Zaha etc...not good enough to be at this club and where we aspire to get back to. I've seen nothing in Zaha to suggest he's any better than Lingard from our own academy. Yet the latter has had to wait until today to be given a first team debut. Ruthlessness is the key when it comes to departures over the next fortnight or so.

I had a feeling we'd get beat today when I saw the injuries had caught up with us. How we didn't see this coming weeks ago, particularly in defence, is just beyond me. I also expect us to go quite strongly in the market over the next couple of weeks. Arsenal's signing of Ozil after they lost to Villa on the Opening Day last year totally lifted their place. We need the same, but we need three or four players. Maybe that's the 'transfer muppet' in me speaking but believe me, I'm usually the one saying we don't need to spend as much as other people think. In this instance we do, although I do concede we've spent a lot in the last twelve months, generally well, with the exception of Fellaini, in my opinion. Molding the team out of them is proving difficult though.

We've got the right man in charge but this isn't a quick fix. However, we're at a crossroads and we talk a good game, now we've got to go and back it up. This club should never lose sight of what it is and it is a club that gives young players a chance, that'll continue under van Gaal as we saw today. But we say we're the biggest football club in the world, go and sign the likes of Benatia, Di Maria and Vidal and prove it. The outlay will be massive, completely unprecedented for us, but sell the deadwood to recoup a small amount back. Bring players of that quality in and we'd definitely make the Champions League this season as a bare minimum so we'd get lots of money from that, plus the basis of the team will be much stronger going forward, Transfer windows for the next couple of years would be more about tweaking then and we'd have no need to spend anything like this cash again.

The alternative to not strengthening properly now could have far worse consequences long term. For the owners it's a case of short term pain for potentially a hell of a lot of long term gain. I never, ever would want to see us lose any football match, but I hope today acts as a firm wake up call to those concerned, before we end up in even more of a hole.

It is only one game, but the issue can be nipped in the bud somewhat now before it becomes a potentially bigger problem"

I rate Van Gaal but I'm realistic enough to see that it's going to take him a while to get United competitive again - 6 years going backwards is quite a bit to put right

There's only Van Persie in the squad that is top drawer, De Gea and Rooney are adequate but both with big question marks at the high levels

The main problem is Jones, Smalling and Evans. All Championship players but expected to be the bedrock of a title winning side. They will give even very poor sides at least 3 gilt edged chances every game - good sides will take all of them and create even more

But.....but.......I thought Van Gaal was a genius ? That's all we read in the World Cup.

Maybe he should have brought Tim Krul on......

If we get a few players in before the window shuts we'll be fine. That's a big if though. We're desperate for 2 defenders and a midfielder

he is....didnt you see the way he has skillfully lost the first game to induce a false sense of security in the other title contenders

The issue yesterday for me wasn't to do with who we've not yet brought in, it was to do with those playing not playing well. I said during the game that we lacked cutting edge and that's not going to be improved by bringing in an extra holding midfielder or centre back. I was disappointed personally with Herrera & Mata during the game, I didn't feel like they imposed themselves enough and that inevitably led to the uncertainty across the team.

I've not once denied that we need a couple of extra players in there, even with those though we need to avoid playing blunt which is the best way I can describe yesterday's performance.

If anything the positive to take from it is the honeymoon period is over before it's really begun. It's not much but I guess it gives the new people at the club an early insight into what they can expect if they don't solve the problems.

I think that United might find that the top players won't even consider joining if there is no CL football because it's all about their own profile.

United never really buy the top players though, we have won things with big squads of good players rather than world class talent

One of the big problems for me is the fear factor, United players appear scared of playing at Old Trafford where as opponents now relish it. Our lads seem frightened on trying to impose themselves on the game now all the leaders of the past aren't there alongside them

Well that's just 3 points better than last year.

    Impressive Southampton side.

I was surprised by how much they made you work for that, they created some good chances in that second half.

Having said that sterling carried on where he left off, definite contender for POY.

Ward-Prowse looked handy for Southampton too, he'll play for England sooner rather than later if he continues to develop

I was surprised that he didn't bring any of Fabregas, Hummels, Vidal, Falcao, Robben or Kroos on

To be fair, we have 5 players to come back into that team. Evans, Rafael and Shaw (despite what you think about the first 2) are 3 of our first choice back 4, then Carrick in midfield and Van Persie up front may well have been a different story.

Even after that we could have had Valencia or Welbeck to bring on. That's 7 missing in total.

at least 3 of them played in the FA Cup defeat in January. Injuries are nothing to do with why you got beat I am afraid.

We beat Swansea home and away last season in the league. What's your point?
