    Default Club Nicknames

Super League brought for every club except our own the increased marketing experience of nickname addition to the club.

With us playing Wakefield on Friday who I thought had a great title in Trinity but then went down the Wildcat route

I just wondered what others thought about the concept all these years on. I thought the Blue Sox a disaster but feel Rhinos really worked.

We do have one, it was already our Nickname, The Saints! just like the Hull clubs in that regard.
And Wakefield moved back to using Trinity as in Wakefield Trinity Wildcats.
Some have been adopted with the fans (Bulls, Rhinos, Giants) others just haven't captured the imagination. Doesn't do any harm I suppose.

I presume that the Hull Sharks moniker didn't add anything, hence Hull FC jettisoning it pretty quickly.

Didn't Hull Sharks change because of the merger with Gateshead?

I thought they were stupid in 1996, and I still think they're stupid now.

Nothing like chucking your heritage down the grid, is there?

Had someone told me in the early 90s, that all these teams would tag crude americanised nicknames, and couple them with representative logos thereof, I would have thought you would have gone mental.

"Alright, Ste. In six years time, Leeds will be called the Leeds Rhinos."
-"Huh, what? What on earth for?"

    And,
"Trinity Wildcats" is just... I mean, how do you go from a Rugby Club formed out of a church, to a seldom seen oversized house feline, and the combination of these two ideas? It's a complete mockery of culture, meaning, and history. I also don't buy the argument that it gets children involved or interested either. I'd wager that it has had no effect whatsoever.

That said, I'm glad that we were fortunate enough to have a nickname inherent within that name of our team. Because I do have to chuckle somewhat at the Wigan Warriors. Warriors? Completely unnecessary!

Yeah, totally agree on that, we've done ok from that point of view. Also think you're right that they've had no effect at all, just like the squad numbers all a bit of a gimmick that could be reversed tomorrow with nobody noticing.

2 big mistakes I think that St Helens made was 1 doing away with the original badge and " EX TERRA LUCEM " and 2 not keeping it on the Saints shirts even if it meant including it with this thing that is on now.

Why would you want to call a team after a rabbit?

No Idea where the Rabbitoh's come from but it is not a recent change. They were called that in the early 70's to my knowledge, and probably long before.

because souths were in a poor area and the players used to catch bunnies to skin and sell to make ends meet.

Hull Sharks were a "different" club.

In the same way that Oldham Bears and Oldham Roughyeds are different clubs. Likewise Celtic Crusaders and North Wales Crusaders.

Castleford were called Tigers before Super League.

Hull KR is another. They've always been Rovers / Robins.

I loved the EA sports Rugby League game that came out in 96 or 97, the commentary referred to St Helens as Saints, Halifax as Fax, Warrington as Wire but best of all was Wigan's......Pie-eaters!!!

Used to take a minute to score a full length try with Darren Albert though!

Great game, except it had bloody Edwards on the box
