    Default International Rugby League News

Right, hoping to keep this thread running (a potential sticky thread mods?) and keep posting news about the International game and developments outside the NRL and the RFL-run UK leagues.

First article is a cracker in my opinion:

Bit of interesting news from the USA... Looks like the USARL will be a ten-team competition this year AND more importantly, the USARL and AMNRL will be playing in a 9s tournament; seems to be a bit of a drive for unification of the game over the pond. Good news!

Also interesting is seeing the link up of Leeds and Atlanta:

New European structure announced by the RLEF. Disappointing they have sorted out the top division out yet for this season's qualifying competition for the 2016 Four Nations over here.

Canadian International fixtures released for the year:

Fair bit of buzz about the game in Canada; they get some very good crowds over there! Check the games out on Premier Sports later in the year.

New teams in the USARL this season:

The USARL have also applied to the RLIF for recognition as the governing body in the US AND set up a new pioneer side (linked below); things starting to develop over the pond!

Rumour has it there will be no GB tour to Australia next year as the Australian Players Union are vetoing the idea; too many games! With the French due to tour NZ, it looks England/GB may well not have anyone to play in the International window!

Perfect opportunity for a pacific islands tour or get some of them coming over here for a series of games against the home nations. Stuff the Aussies.

Hope this isn't true at all! With the 4 nations being in Aus/NZ this year, then I'd try and get the Aussies to come over here for a tour. It's strange that they don't want any international games in 2015, because it's the year before the World Cup that they don't usually play any games. In theory we may not have any meaningful internationals over here until 2018!

Worst case scenario, we would have to do a pacific tour in 2015, and maybe try and get NZ to come over here in 2016. And if the GB tour does happen, I sincerely hope we stop using the term 'ashes' series.

It crossed my mind after watching PNG in the WC.
Invite them, or similar, over here for a clubs tour, plus an international or two.
Obviously there would be cost and time implications, but we really should be building on the apparent success of the early rounds of the WC.

Ukraine vs Serbia! Highlights linked below. There is actually a match between Ukraine and Russia soon; that should be fairly explosive...!

The RLIF and the assorted governing bodies have made a balls up of all the goodwill and excitement generated by last year's World Cup. England will not host a top international in this country until 2016 (Four Nations is scheduled); that is mental to me and is rank bad planning. The powers at be genuinely do not have a clue both here and down under. If the Players Union in Oz won't agree, no chance of Australia playing at home, nevermind playing overseas!

Agree in sentiment about the Aussies but the players union will represent most of the Pacific Island players as the vast majority are Australia-based. If this boycott does go ahead, it would have a dramatic impact on most international sides minus England, Wales, France and arguably NZ. Someone in the RLIF needs to grow some testicles and tell the Australian Players Union where to poke it as there is a rule that players MUST be released for internationals somewhere I believe... that will never happen though as the RLIF in essence are the RFL, NRL and NZRL whose loyalties lie with the club game. We desperately need an independent RLIF, not run by idiots like Wood.

    Grudge match:

    RUSSIA 24 vs 18 UKRAINE
    Venue: Vereya Stadium, Vereya
    24th May 2014

    Russia
    Tries:
    Bratko (14), Ovchinnikov (26), Vlasyuk (52), Zdobnikov (60), Kosharin (73)

    Goals:
    Grigorian 0/1, Ososkov 0/1, Zdobnikov 1/2, Bratko 1/1

    Ukraine
    Tries:
    Skorbach (22,70,77)

    Goals:
    Skorbach 3/3

Ukraine were halted a metre from the Russian try line searching for a draw with the final play of a great contest, as the Bears ran out narrow 24-18 winners in Vereya. The visitors, benefitting from a hit out last week in Serbia were in contention throughout and, with seven minutes to play had got it back to 18-12 with the second Oleksandr Skorbach’s self-converted tries. But from the re-start, Gennady Vepryk’s men knocked on and the Russian’s worked the ball up-field for Kirill Kosharin to post the game breaking score.

Stand-off Skorbach, who scored all Ukraine’s points with a terrific hat trick was a standout, centre Andrey Zdobnikov Russia’s best with five line breaks in the 28 degrees heat. Ukraine could have taken the lead in the opening exchanges but dropped the ball over the line, a fate that twice befell the Russians later on, Dmitriy Bratko opening the scoring for the home side in the 14th minute with an unconverted try, Artem Grigoryan missing the kick.

Skorbach was over eight minutes later and put Ukraine ahead, Roman Ovchinnikov replying almost immediately to give the Bears an 8-6 half time lead, Eduard Ososkov failing with the extras.

Vladimir Vlasyuk extended Russia’s lead twelve minutes into the second half, Zdobnikov goaling and then extending the lead on the hour to 18-6 with a well-deserved try that he could not convert. Between the scores, referee Tom Mather had sent Ovchinnikov to the sin bin for a professional foul. Skorbach hit back in the 70th minute but Ukraine surrendered the initiative, Bratko goaling Kosharin’s score to give them breathing space, Skorbach setting up a frantic finish with his third touchdown.

    RUSSIA
Maksim Suchkov, Dmitriy Bratko, Mikhail Nisiforov, Andrei Zdobnikov, Rustam Bulanov, Eduard Ososkov, Artem Grigorian, Sergey Konstantinov, Roman Ovchinnikov, Anatoly Grigorev, Vadim Fedchuk, Kirill Kosharin, Vladimir Vlasyuk. Subs: Mikhail Burlutskiy, Konstantin Roschin, Alexey Nikolaev, Denis Tiulenev

    UKRAINE
Volodymyr Mashkin, Bogdan Vepryk, Sergei Soschenko, Igor Shevtsov, Mykhailo Troyan, Andrii Bashevskyi, Oleksandr Skorbach, Oleksandr Kozak, Pavel Kardakov, Maksym Miroshnichenko, Vitalii Felko, Artur Martyrosyan, Sergii Kravchenko. Subs: Igor Iurkin, Volodomyr Karpenko, Mykola Getmanov, Konstantyn Butov

Good to see something going on at this level, but where are NZ, and who came up with the idea of calling England 'Lions'?

No idea on the 'England Lions' name; it is pretty pump... Ref your NZ question, this statement was listed on the facebook page, which answers the question:

"The competition was set up to represent the six continents of the Commonwealth (North America, Caribbean, Europe, Asia, Africa and Oceania) and the competitors are a spread of those continents. Australia and Papua New Guinea were selected as the representatives of Oceania, England, Wales and Scotland for Europe, Jamaica for the Caribbean, Canada for North America and South Africa for Africa. It may be that the Oceania representatives for the next tournament are New Zealand and Samoa or another nation in Oceania, just as Ghana may be the African nation and Trinidad and Tobago may be the Caribbean nation."

Something else I noticed was the competition is probably going to be televised, which is great news! Details to be released shortly according to the page...

This month sees rugby league’s fourth Nordic Cup kick off with the three competing nations – Norway, Denmark and holders Sweden - better prepared than ever.

All three governing bodies have agreed to seek international status for the matches, which would mean the contests being played for world ranking points.

Sweden head coach, Ashley Brown, who led them to their first silverware last year commented: “We will be hosting Norway and then looking to be the first nation to claim back-to-back Nordic titles when we travel to Denmark in August. We are looking to continue to build the sport in the country on the back of our exploits.”

Norway – the 2012 winners - has strengthened by re-engaging the services of former head coach Craig West, currently with the Catalan Dragons in Perpignan, who led the Vikingene in their 2011 European Shield campaign.

“I’m really looking forward to working with the squad and improving structure,” he said. “No doubt Sweden and Denmark will be tough opponents but I believe we have the quality to regain the trophy.”

Denmark, the inaugural holders, should be stronger since the emergence of two new domestic clubs which have given local players more opportunities to play the sport.

“The 2014 tournament is very nicely poised,” noted Danmark Rugby League Forbund secretary Richard Naylor. “Each of the nations has won the Nordic Cup once so far. We have now gone longest without success, so we will be giving our all to take the title back.”

    NORDIC CUP 2014 - SCHEDULE

    28 June: Norway v Denmark
    16 August: Denmark v Sweden
    30 August Sweden v Norway
