Started to Snow again in Wigan, so shouldn't be that long for it to hit St Helens providing it heads in that direction...

Just had an idea to attempt to grit (sprikle salt!) down in our car park to melt some ice and have been told its not advisable as if someone slips on it or has an accident they can sue!

Apparantly (now some of you are older so will know ) people used to grit their own front years ago but dont anymore for this reason.

Were the trains to Chester not running from Earlestown or Newton le Willows today? I don't know how your are fixed getting to to Earlestown or Newton but its much quicker getting the train to Chester that way than going through Liverpool by train from St Helens Central and then on to Chester if of course they are running. Earlestown to Chester is normally a 35min journey.

Apparently so. I've not looked it up but have been told that if you fall where someone has attmepted to grit, it's their fault..... yet if you fall where it is sheet ice, it's an act of god. Or something.

Half of our estate appears to have gritted in front of their drives, so we can forget the no-one doing it anymore theory.

They were running from Newton a couple of colleagues went from there. However, my car was stuck and there were no buses running. Whilst it takes longer via .Liverpool St H Central is walkable from my house and Newton really isnt !

With the help of 6 passers by I have manged to move my car onto one of the main roads so have a chance of driving somewhere tomorrow.

I must say that there has been quite a community spirit in evidence around where I reside which many people would lead you believe doesn't exist anymore. Been quite heartening.

Its like the War all over again lol

Have to say though, it makes me laugh when people are panic buying and buying bread in bulk for example. You would think its the end of the world, and not just a cold snap.

Work and back today from St Helens to Birkenhead. Some of the main roads though are appalling. Prescot Road is a joke for a lot of it.

Got back to Haydock today, and boy what a contrast with the roads in the South Manchester, Stockport council areas.

All the main roads there were completely clear of snow, so you were driving on tarmac not slutch or ice.

Get back to Haydock Island and see the disgrace that is the East lancs road. Only 1 lane open and that is covered with a cm of snow/ice. Now we are not talking about a minor road here, we are talking about a strategic road corridor that links Manchester and Liverpool.

Getting onto clipsley lane was like hitting a road that had not seen the site of grit or a snow plough in the last 2 weeks. Any thought of getting out of 2nd gear and driving above 15 mph was quickly extinguished.
Its just one long white sheet of compacted snow.
Now considering this is a major road and one of St.helens councils supposed priority routes for keeping clear one has to ask what exactly have they been doing.

The only bright point was to see my local street.
In a symbol of community spirit, most of the men in the street had today been out and cleared the entire road of snow using shovels. They have also made clear pathways up and down both sides of the street. Telephone lines have also been cleared of all the snow to prevent them coming down.

If every other minor street, avenue and close in St.helens showed such a community spirit to help each other out, then people would no longer be facing half the hassle they have been facing.

I wish more people were like those that live in your street.

I was prepared to make our car park safer but after hearing people can sue, its not worth it. I fell over in slow motion last night in our car park lol and nearly got stuck again this morning in my new car! I pinched a spec where someone had parked before it snowed so had grip on the tarmac but it was still hard driving off when i'd hit the compacted snow/ice

There are more people on the roads this morning but its clear some havent been out since Monday as they're driving like it's a Sunday!

Talking off community spirit, has anybody thought off the elderly who lives nearby? Me and my girls went to every OAP to ask them if they was OK and needed anything from the shops.

everyone in our apartment block can look after themselves but if i were at mums we would've asked our elderly neighbours if they needed anything. Mind you, the guy next door but one to mum must be in his 70's, is fit as a fiddle and would be up to the spar at the top of the road and back again while i'd be stuck outside still de-icing my car!

My next door is like that, in his 70's and can get about and do loads, saying that he was an army instructor in his younger days so it's paid off for him...

Been out today to do some food shopping found driving ok except on the supermarket car park which was a bit dodgy but they had tried to clear the snow with some sort of snow plough which left a layer of ice and was tricky walking on it

Probably not weather related but my clutch cable has gone this morning. Car was abandonded in the middle of my close and luckily 2 neighbours came out to push it onto the kerb with me.

Phoned the AA as I have homestart but due to the severe delays, worst case scenario is 24 hrs! I will be at the bottom of the priority list as in fairness at least I am home so thats understandable! Re-arranged to work one of my days off next week so at least I am home on a Friday!

Hectors snowed in (the horse i look after) and his owners had to walk it to the yard every day 'cos cars have got stuck on the car park and had to be abandoned. Poor pony

I cant believe how many people still drive up the arse end of the car in front (mainly taxi's). Its like theres no middle ground, people are either driving dangerously fast/close to the car in front OR they're driving ridiculously slow everywhere.
