he has a good reputation in Aus.
Question is can he handle the transition from being an assistant to head coach, especially in a competition he isnt familiar with.
"If you're going to strive for a change then you have to keep going upwards,"
Keiron Cunningham, 2016
lets see if he completes the three year contract
only one out of the previous ten incumbants in the SL era has managed that

Always thought he was funny on Mock the Week and Live at the Apollo, should be good craic.
Craig Bellamy said he would be hard to replace at Melbourne, and I think he was very instrumental in getting that team to the standard it has achieved. Being around the likes of Inglis, Slater and Smith everyday means he will have high standards and will know how to get the best out of that team.
Good move for Wigan IMO.
yes - but Wigan are cheating because he doesn't actually qualify for the job since he has never been a head coach. Wigan cheating again. Also - he has not got anywhere near the same playing roster and it is a graveyard for coaches - if he wants an NRL job then this is the wrong SL club to go to.
Noble wasnt treated very well by Wigan in my opinion.
He may have a good reputation in an Oz, but the question is can he polish a turd?
I'm pleased for the sport that he isn't another Brian Smith disciple. He's from the wayne Bennett/Craig Bellamy school of coaching so expect Wigan to play some attractive stuff next season.
Sanctus Espiritus! Insanity is all around us...
You could argue the other way though. The Australians generally ignore our comp (look at the general lack of interest in what DA did at Saints in the lead up to NRL GF last week) but Wigan are the team that they've all heard of and respect to some degree. If he gets Wigan to a GF or wins the Cup, which shouldn't be beyond the realms of their abilities, then he'll get noticed alot more down there.
Silver polish will be in demand over the next few years at Wigan, i think as a result of this appointment.
He is very highly regarded down under, and you have to remember that if Noble took Wigan to the brink of finals then an aussie coach will get them to finals.
Expect Wigan to be a fitter, and far better organised outfit next season.
Im not looking forward to clashes against ould enemy next year
That's the key, they will be better conditioned and ready at the right time of the year. He made sure that Melbourne were always the fittest team come play-off time and will do so with Wigan. The quality of players he has to choose from isn't comparable with what he coached down there but neither is the quality of players they are facing. Wigan have used their heads and picked well IMO.
may have a rep in oz but so does harry potter apparently,
at least hes not one of brian smiths proteges,
The past was yours but the future's mine,
You're all out of time.
Well if I were him, I would pick the phone up to Lenaghan and say you can stick you job right up your @rse.
"Wigan Chairman Ian Lenaghan has been speaking to Skysports Fraser Dainton"
FD "So what is you see in Maguire that makes you think he will be a big success here and he is the man for the job"
IL "Well he is available whereas Steven Kearney is not as he is the New Zealand national coach ..."
DOH!!! Welcome to Wigan Maguire, such a valued employee already. I can't believe IL said that live on TV. He is available but our first choice isn't. I don't think the bloke will see out his contract, he is being treated badly and he hasn't arrived yet.
He is "highly related" according to Craig Bellamy on BBC website. More cleaning jobs for the family coming under salary cap, I see.
Weren't Melbourne pilloried for wresting, grapple tackles and chicken wings a couple of years ago?
I wonder if he'll bring those aspects of his coaching over?
At the end of the day Wigan know stuff all about him and are gambling that he will make a good head coach because he was associated with all the success at Melbourne.
It's the equivalent of getting Francis Cummins as your head coach.
Why?
He was taking them nowhere and was only bringing youth through when forced.
Do you think we sacked McCrae, Hanley or Millward without having another coach lined up or even talked to people about the role?
The only difference here is Kearney opened his gob about it.
I'm too pretty to be unlucky
Awful stuff from Lenagan. But MaGuire is still a good choice given that the supposed No.1 choice Kearney is also an assistant at Melbourne as well as being NZ coach. Wigan now have a coach who has worked closely with a top coach like Bellamy, worked with Kearney and also coached some of the World's greatest players.
