Some good choices here people, thanks.

The last 2 weeks out with mates has consisted of a game where they get a point for a film that I have seen. The one with the fewest points had to buy the beers.

Although I have actually seen The Green Mile, Seven and Shaving Ryans Privates, sorry Saving Private Ryan lol

Ski- I think I will have to watch this Requiem for a Dream film, sounds superb.

Replace Robocop with Starship Troopers, almost as good

Can't believe you have never seen The Good, the Bad and the Ugly! Even though they don't follow on in terms of plot watch the other two first though

That is my fave film of all time. I'd suggest it may be worth watching again. I have it on DVD if you wanna borrow it?

We might disagree on football my son, but it can't be argued you have great taste in movies.

Hmmm, I was always brought up never to accept gifts from strangers

In all seriousness, I may well watch it again, thanks. My wife wants to start me off with the likes of Shawshank Redemption and go from there. She gets frustrated that I have never watched the 80' stuff like "Big", "Teen Wolf" and "Ferris Buelers something or other"

Sideways (not for Merlot drinkers )

    Sliding Doors

    The Shining

    Lost in Translation

The Big Lebowski (or pretty much anything with Jeff Bridges eg. K-Pax and The Fisher King)

For something a little older try Papillon or The Birdman of Alcatraz

    Ferris Bueller's Day Off

What exactly happened to you in the 80s? Were you cut off from the outside world?

I'm sure a lot of those 80s classics will seem a bit crap if you watch them for the first time now.

You make me sound like some dodgy bloke on a street corner with a packet of sweets and a cheeky smile... I'm just in a great mood because I've just drunk four pints in my lunchbreak.

The Shawshank Redemption is a great film, one of the better Stephen King novels converted to film. 'Big', 'Teen Wolf' and 'Ferris Bueller's Day Off' are rather cheesy, turn your brain off movies. They're the sort of movie you might refer to as 'hangover tv'.

Funnily enough a few people have said that. It sounds like I had a bad upbringing when in reality I had a great childhood. I suppose I was too busy playing sports and did not have the attention span to watch films.

Also you are probably right in that there is no point watching 80's films now as they will be pretty crap, now that I am in my mid 30's. Other mates have said that also.

    Don't be daft.

Like I said, watch each film on its own merit. Some have aged well, some haven't. It doesn't take away their qualities. Like when Dinosaurs Ruled the Earth. I saw this as a 7 year old and fell in love, while my brother hated it because it wasn't Jurassic Park.

Breakfast Club is a fine teen flick, with a superb soundtrack.

Donny Darko is a GREAT film set in the 80s. Well worth a watch and another with a great soundtrack.

Indeed, if you look on the Imdb top 250 I bet not many of them are in there. I've watched Ferris Bueller recently and it's still ok though.

Imdb may be a good place for you to see if you like the look of the recommendations on here.

Well starting next week, I aim to rectify all of this. 1 film a week approx so could take me a while.

Shawshank Redemption looks like being the 1st one.

saving private ryan, the life of brain, the shawshank redemption, pulp fiction, american history x.
all 5 in my opinion have changed the face of films, and film-making and are a reflection of humankind and the way we live. especially the life of brian.
