If England is not a country, what is it?

Prime Ministers are elected to all intents and purposes. Many many people take into account the party leader when voting.

You're going to have to learn your history. The English arrived after the Romans left. The first English (Anglo-Saxons) started their invasion in 496, the Romans left nearly 90 years before in in 409. King Harold was a direct lineage from those English invaders.

Since then we've never had an English royal family. We've had Norman, French, Welsh, Scots and German with a bit of Dutch and Greek thrown in.

The only time we had a true Englishman ruling England in all the time was when we chopped the Kings head off and had that true Yoeman of England - Cromwell.

Thank God someone has moved this onto the Off Topic. A thread that started with a new song has turned into a history lesson and a "I know more than you" mentality.

    www.wikipedia.org. Try that one.

It is very unlikely that the Prime Minister (who is not elected but merely primus inter pares among the senior MP's within the party forming the electoral majority in the House of Commons) would be overruled by the Monarch. she would need the People, Police, and Armed Forces with her but if we were to have a situation where someone like the vile creature that is Nick Griffin were to be elected, there are constitutional arrangements in place. That is why the PM must ask the Queen to dissolve Parliament.

The Royal Family are more to this country than just a family of publically paid individuals who live in nice houses and go on fancy holidays and talk with a nice accent. So there are there for more than show. The revenue they generate for this country in crude financial terms is worth its weight in gold.

I think this whole argument is basically an extension of the civil war and has been rehearsed numerous times; some of us are Royalists, some are Parliamentarians. I have a lot of respect for Parliamentarians, but before we go headlong for a republic, take a cursory glance through the history books and look what happened under Cromwell when we were a Republic and in America under Bush. Ultimately, I'm a Royalist and the National Anthem is about more than the preservation of one person to a great many people. Although the music is not exactly as inspiring as some, it means an awful lot and to not respect it causes deep offence, particularly when respect is shown to other national anthems. You are within your right not to like it, but please do not disrespect it or the Royal Family.

    This thread's hilarious

IMO im with those that think we should change our national anthem to something thats national - not about a figure on a penny. Yes, they bring in tourists and blah blah but thats another thread altogether.

Im with Ski on not standing for the 'NA' - I'll respect the things i believe in and acknowledge the things others believe in, but in MY own way.
    Your favourite worst nightmare

    Example - Wont go quietly
